The role of chunks and automatization in pronunciation in German as a foreign language. A study on Czech beginners' assimilation processes

Abstract:

The subject of the master thesis “The influence of chuks on the pronunciation of Czech German-learning beginners” is how the presence of chunks and increasing automatization affect the phonetic aspect of the German language for Czech native speakers beginning to study German. The basic phonetic terms such as coarticulation, assimilation and its types, plosives, fricatives and the fortis-lenis distinction are defined in the theoretical part of the thesis. Knowledge of these terms is necessary for understanding this subject. Then, the German and Czech assimilation are compared and the essential differences are explained. The basic functions of the mental lexicon - a database of words in the human brain - are described, along with other phenomena such as attention and monitoring. These phenomena have influence on the process of adopting and processing new words in a foreign language and therefore participate in the formation of automated sequences and chunks. In the empiric part of the thesis, I deal with the research that was done on two different high schools in Brno. The aim of the research was to explain how the process of automation given exercises affects the pupils’ assimilation based on the combination of qualitative and quantitative approach and also to find out if it depends on how long the pupil is studying German. I obtained data capturing the researched phenomenon itself and also information about other factors influencing the final result based on the observation combined with elements of an experiment and a questionnaire.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce “ Role Chunks a procesů automatizování při výslovnosti v německém jazyce jako cizím jazyce“ se zabývá tím, jak přítomnost automatismů ovlivňuje asimilační procesy v německé výslovnosti u českých rodilých mluvčí, kteří s německým jazykem začínají. Teoretická část této práce je věnována nejprve definici základních fonetických pojmů jako je např. koartikulace, asimilace a její typy, plosíva, frikatíva a opozice fortis/lenis, které jsou pro pochopení dané problematiky nezbytné. Po té následuje srovnání německé a české asimilace a jsou vyzdviženy jejich rozdíly, které při osvojování německého jazyka nelze opomenout. Dále jsou zde popsány základní funkce mentálního lexikonu jakožto databáze slov v lidském mozku a další vybrané jevy jako jsou pozornost a monitoring. Tyto jevy mají vliv na proces osvojování si nových slov v jazyce a na jejich další zpracování, čímž se významně podílejí na vzniku automatismů a chunks. Obsah empirické části tvoří výzkum, jehož účastníky jsou žáci z dvou vybraných brněnských gymnázií. Cílem tohoto výzkumu bylo na základě kombinace metod kvalitativního a kvantitativního přístupu objasnit, jakým způsobem se proces automatizace vybraného cvičení projeví na asimilaci žáků při jeho realizaci a zda v tomto směru hraje roli, jak dlouho se žáci německý jazyk učí. Na základě pozorování kombinovaného s prvky experimentu a dotazníku byla získána nejen data zachycující samotný zkoumaný jev, ale i informace o dalších faktorech majících vliv na konečný výsledek. Pro vyvození závěru majícího všeobecnou platnost by však bylo ještě zapotřebí podrobnější analýzy získaných dat, provést podrobnější studii, zohlednit další aspekty při výuce německého jazyka a dlouhodobější spolupráce s žáky.
