Brno's Mosque and the Muslim Community in the Perspective of Brno's Citizens

Anotácia:

Cílem práce je zmapovat vývoj brněnské muslimské obce a její integraci do českého kulturního prostředí. Práce popisuje prolínání evropské kultury s islámskou, dále pak mapuje vývoj islámu, právní statut islámské společnosti a problematiku výstavby mešit na území České republiky, se zřetelem na brněnskou mešitu. Práce se především zaměřuje na vnímání brněnské mešity samotnými obyvateli Jihomoravské metropole. Hlavní část práce tvoří analýza mediálního obrazu brněnské muslimské obce a muslimů žijících na území města Brna a kvantitativní výzkum veřejného mínění mezi nemuslimskými obyvateli města Brna, jehož cílem je zjistit, jak Brňané vnímají muslimskou minoritu a do jaké míry jsou ovlivněni svými náboženskými představami a kulturními stereotypy. Problém je řešen v kontextu historického vývoje islámu v Českých zemích a výstavby mešit v ostatních městech České republiky.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to map the development of Brno’s Muslim community and its integration into Czech cultural environment. The thesis describes overlaps of European and Islamic cultures and maps the development of Islam, legal status of the Muslim community and the issue of construction of mosques in the Czech Republic, with a special focus on the mosque in the city of Brno. The thesis concentrates on perception of the Brno’s mosque by the inhabitants of Brno, the capital of Southern Moravia. Main part of the work consists firstly, of an analysis of media coverage of Brno’s Muslim community and of the Muslims living in Brno and secondly, of a quantitative opinion poll conducted among the non-Muslim inhabitants of Brno. The aim of the poll was to determine perception of the Muslim minority by Brno’s inhabitants and to find out to what extend they are influenced by their religious images and cultural stereotypes. The topic is dealt with in the context of historic development of Islam in the Czech lands and construction of mosques in other cities in the Czech Republic.
