Media Image of the Holocaust as a Collective Trauma: A Discourse Analysis of Selected Stories of the Survivors of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá tématem mediální reprezentace jedné z největších tragédií v dějinách lidstva - holokaustu: způsobem její diskursivní konstrukce do podoby kolektivního traumatu. Teoretický kontext práce tvoří perspektiva sociologického konstruktivismu sociologů Petera L. Bergera a Thomase Luckmanna na koncepty kolektivní trauma, kolektivní identita a kolektivní paměť a jejich vzájemné propojení vztažená na způsob vytváření povědomí o historické události. Výzkum je proveden kvalitativní metodou mediální reprezentace holokaustu, diskursivní analýzou podle Jamese P. Geeho. Výzkumný soubor tvoří obsahově konzistentní mediální texty založené na očitých svědectví přeživších holokaust v koncentračním táboře Osvětim na internetové zpravodajské platformě iDNES.cz selektované dle klíčového slova „Osvětim. Skrz interpretaci diskursivních strategií používaných tímto médiem pro konstrukci holokaustu v příbězích přeživších dochází tato práce k následujícímu zjištění: Média mají moc konstruovat reprezentaci holokaustu do kolektivního traumatu a médium iDNES.cz tuto reprezentaci v analyzovaných mediálních textech konstruuje.

Abstract:

The bachelor´s thesis is concerned with a media representation of one of the greatest tragedies in human history – the Holocaust: the way of its discursive construction into a collective trauma. The theoretical background of the thesis consist of a perspective of the sociological constructivism of sociologists Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann on the concepts called collective trauma, collective identity and collective memory and interconnection related to the way of creating the awareness of a historical event. The research is done by a qualitative method of media representations of the Holocaust, the discourse analysis by James Paul Gee. The research sample consists of substantively consistent media texts based on eyewitnesses testimonies of Holocaust survivors in Auschwitz on the internet news platform iDNES.cz selected by the key word “Auschwitz”. Through the interpretation of the discursive strategies used by the media for the construction of the Holocaust in stories of survivors, the thesis comes to following conclusion: The media have the power to construct a representation of the Holocaust into the collective trauma and medium iDNES.cz constructs this representation in the analyzed media texts.
