Øverås's Third Code Revisited: An Investigation of Explicitation in Literary Translation

Anotace:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá jednu z předpokládaných překladových univerzálií, překladově inherentní explicitaci, a testuje hypotézu, že tato explicitace je nedílnou součástí překladatelského chování a vede k cílovým textům, které jsou explicitnější než zdrojové texty. Cílem je prokázat, zda výsledky studie Linn Øverås, která zkoumala překladově inherentní explicitaci v literárním překladu mezi angličtinou a norštinou, budou platit také pro překlady mezi angličtinou a češtinou. Metodologicky je práce postavena na manuální analýze zkoumaných textů – jde o prvních 50 vět z dvaceti anglických překladů českých románů a dvaceti českých překladů anglických románů. V těch jsou identifikovány případy překladově inherentní explicitace a také tendence opačné, implicitace, aby byl výsledný obraz překladového chování objektivní a úplný. Analýza potvrdila testovanou hypotézu: překladově inherentní explicitace se ukázala být dominantní tendencí v analyzovaných textech. Práce je rozdělená do tří oddílů. První část začíná shrnutím původní studie Linn Øverås a poté nabízí přehled teoretických otázek k tématu explicitace, které vztahuje na metodologii původní studie i této práce. V této části je také představena definice překladově inherentní explicitate, která byla použita při analýze testovaných textů. Druhý oddíl představuje případy explicitace a implicitace, které analýza v textech odhalila, a to rozdělené do čtyř formálních kategorií. V posledním oddílu jsou shrnuty výsledky analýzy a také jejich srovnání s výsledky Linn Øverås. Práce končí zhodnocením metodologie a návrhy na její případné zkvalitnění.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on one of the proposed translation universals, translation-inherent explicitation, and investigates whether it is a general tendency in translation and thus leads to target texts which are more explicit than source texts. The aim is to find out whether the results of a study by Linn Øverås, who investigated translation-inherent shifts in literal translation between English and Norwegian, would hold also for translations between English and Czech. Methodologically, the study is based on a manual analysis of the primary texts which consist of the first 50 sentences taken from 20 Czech novels translated into English and 20 English novels translated into Czech. From these, cases of translation-inherent explicitation as well as the counterpart implicitation are extracted in order to provide a complete picture of the translators’ behaviour. The results of the analysis confirmed the initial hypothesis: Translation-inherent explicitation turned out to be a general tendency in the analysed translations. The thesis is divided into three parts. First, after summarising Øverås’s study, a theoretical overview is given and the individual issues are related to the methodology devised by Øverås and also to the present thesis. Most importantly, the first part introduces the definition of translation-inherent explicitation which is used in the study. The second part of the thesis presents the shifts found, classified into four categories. The third part offers the findings of the analysis, their comparison with Øverås’s study and the overall results. The thesis is concluded with an evaluation of the model devised by Øverås and suggestions for further improvements.
