Phonetic Changes in the Speech of Anglophone Expatriates

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce zkoumá nepatologickou ztrátu mateřského jazyka na fonetické úrovni u rodilých mluvčích anglického jazyka žijících v České republice. V první části práce je představen fenomén nepatologické ztráty mateřského jazyka a některé výsledky dosavadního výzkumu na tomto poli. Na tomto základě je posléze zformulováno několik hypotéz týkajících se fonetiky rodilých mluvčích anglického jazyka žijících v České republice. V dalším kroku jsou nahrávky 14 těchto mluvčích ohodnoceny co do stupně přítomnosti cizího přízvuku jinými rodilými mluvčími anglického jazyka, a poté analyzovány autorkou pro přítomnost předpokládaných fonetických změn. Skupina účastníků výzkumu je následně rozdělena do tří podskupin podle stupně ztráty mateřského jazyka na fonetické úrovni; hlavními faktory, které nejvíce ovlivňují stupeň této ztráty, se v kontextu tohoto výzkumu zdají být množství komunikace v češtině a množství komunikace v angličtině s dalšími rodilými mluvčími.

Abstract:

The present thesis investigates non-pathological first language attrition on phonetic level in Anglophone expatriates living in the Czech Republic. First, the notion of non-pathological first language attrition is introduced and previous findings in the field are presented. Next, a set of hypotheses concerning the phonetics of Anglophone expatriates living in the Czech Republic is constructed. Recordings of 14 Anglophone expatriates are then assessed in terms of sounding foreign/ native by other native speakers of English, and analyzed by the author for the presence of hypothesized phonetic changes. The pool of participants is then divided into three groups according to the degree of first language attrition on phonetic level; the factors that seem to influence the degree of L1 attrition the most significantly in the context of the present research are the amount of communication in Czech and the amount of communication in English with other expatriates.
