Abstract:

Tématem této disertační práce je islámský modernismus v Egyptě jako myšlenkový směr požadující náboženskou a společenskou reformu. Tento směr byl v Egyptě velmi významný v průběhu několika desetiletí na konci 19. století a na začátku 20. století. V práci je věnována pozornost relativně úzkému, přesto reprezentativnímu okruhu osobností, jež svým dílem pomáhaly spoluutvářet intelektuální dějiny moderního Egypta a moderního islámu jako takového. Motivem k napsání této dizertační práce byla skutečnost, že pestrému myšlenkovému světu moderního islámu, s pochopitelnou výjimkou islámského fundamentalismu a jeho extrémních variant, byla dosud v českém odborném prostředí věnována jen nevelká pozornost. Práce je věnována analýze islámsko-modernistických přístupů k řešení otázek, jež vyvstaly v Egyptě spolu s modernitou, s detailním zaměřením na body, v nichž se islámští modernisté rozešli s některými východisky a normami, jež byly po staletí nedílnou součástí teologie a právní vědy v klasickém islámu, aby tak ve svých reinterpretacích dosáhli harmonie mezi islámem jako Bohem zjeveným náboženským systémem a požadavky, jež sebou přinášela dynamická modernita. Zvláštní důraz je v práci kladen na oblast politické teorie a otázek ženské emancipace. Islámský modernismus byl jak teoretickým myšlenkovým proudem, tak směrem s nemalým přesahem i do společenské praxe. Projevoval se jak v náročných filozofických pojednáních, tak v "prozaické" činnosti v rámci různých reformních snah. Z této komplexnosti a komplikovanosti tématu a jeho přesahů mezi náboženskou teorií a společenskou praxí je zřejmé, že se tato práce metodologicky pohybuje na pomezí historiografie a religionistiky. V případě velkého množství prací v oblasti islámských studií se jedná o přístup vcelku typický a v dosti případech i jediný možný. Základní hypotézy, z nichž jsem během psaní této disertační práce vycházel, jsou: 1) Islámský modernismus v sobě obsahuje dvě zdánlivě protichůdná východiska. Na jedné straně požaduje návrat k původním kořenům, ke Koránu a k příkladu proroka Muhammada, na straně druhé programově přijímá modernitu a ideál všeobecného pokroku daleko nad rámec pouhého přejímání západních technických a materiálních výdobytků. Tento paradox je v islámském modernismu řešen ztotožněním "pravého", tedy správně chápaného a praktikovaného islámu s pokrokem a hodnotami či institucemi moderní civilizace. 2) Islámští modernisté vycházeli z Koránu jako knihy zjevené Bohem a tento jeho status nikdy nezpochybnili. Jejich argumentace byla založena na reinterpretaci koránského textu, zdůrazňování nadčasových etických hodnot v něm obsažených na úkor dobově podmíněného legalismu. Zasazovali se o reformu či alespoň částečné uvolnění některých překonaných norem islámského práva, vehementně odmítali škodlivé "neislámské" tradice. Ovlivnění některými západními hodnotami a idejemi je v islámském modernismu nezpochybnitelné, přesto je rámec modernistických idejí jednoznačně islámský. 3) Přes výše zmíněná společná východiska je islámský modernismus v Egyptě značně heterogenním hnutím postaveným na nesoustavných základech. Myšlenková otevřenost a pružnost je v jeho rámci často "vykoupena" nesystematičností a v některých ohledech jistou vágností. To se projevilo zvláště v debatě o budoucím politickém směřování islámské ummy, kdy se egyptský modernismus rozštěpil na dvě do značné míry protichůdné větve, jednu tíhnoucí k liberálnímu sekularismu, druhou směřující k islámskému fundamentalismu.

Abstract:

This dissertation deals with the topic of Islamic modernism in Egypt as a school of thought calling for religious and social reform. This intellectual current was particularly significant in Egypt over several decades in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Attention is paid to a relatively narrow, yet representative group of thinkers who by their thought and activities helped to shape the intellectual history of modern Egypt and modern Islam as such. The main reason for writing this thesis was the fact that the varied intellectual world of modern Islam was mostly omitted in Czech scholar environment, with the obvious exception of Islamic fundamentalism and its extreme variants. This work is devoted to analysis of Islamic modernist approaches that addressed the issues arosing in Egypt along with modernity, focusing in detail on the points where the Islamic modernists parted with some crucial norms and standards which have been for centuries an integral part of theology and jurisprudence in classical Islam, so they would be able in their reinterpretations to achieve harmony between Islam as a religious system revealed by God and current requirements implied by dynamic modernity. Special emphasis in the dissertation is placed on the area of political theory and women's emancipation issues. Islamic modernism was both a theoretical school of thought and a current with a considerable overlap to social practice. It exhibited itself both in challenging philosophic treatises and "prosaic" reform activities in various fields. Out of this complexity and the complicity of the topic and the overlaps between religious theory and social practice it is evident that this work is methodologically positioned somewhere between historiography and religious studies. In the case of a large number of works in the field of Islamic studies it is a fairly typical approach and in many cases the only one possible. The main hypotheses on which this dissertation was designed are: 1) Islamic modernism contains within itself two seemingly contradictory standpoints. On the one hand it calls for a return to the original roots of Islam, namely the Quran and the example of Prophet Muhammad, and on the other hand it deliberately accepts modernity and the ideal of societal progress far beyond mere acceptance of Western technical and material achievements. This paradox of Islamic modernism is solved by identifying the "real", ie properly understood and practiced Islam with the progress and the values and institutions of modern civilization. 2) Islamic modernists understood the Quran as a book revealed by God and that status was never questioned by them. Their reasoning was based on the reinterpretation of Quranic text, emphasizing timeless ethical values it contained, at the expense of time-dependent legal rules. They advocated reform or at least partial release of some outdated norms of Islamic law and they vehemently refused harmful "un-Islamic" traditions. Although the influence of some Western values and ideas on Islamic modernism is indisputable, the core of most modernist ideas is clearly Islamic. 3) Despite the above mentioned common ground, Islamic modernism in Egypt was a very heterogeneous movement built on somewhat unsystematic foundations. The openness and flexibility of modernist thought mean at times in some respects a certain vagueness. This is reflected especially in the debate on the future political direction of the Islamic ummah, when the Egyptian modernism split into two largely contradictory branches, one tending to liberal secularism, the other towards Islamic fundamentalism.
