The size of the technological gap in selected sectors of the economies of the Visegrad Group countries

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je, s využitím Shift-share analýzy, určit velikost technologické mezery a její determinující faktory. Důraz je kladen na technologickou a strukturální složku vzorce Shift-share analýzy. Výzkum je proveden ve třech odvětvích (Zpracovatelský průmysl, Informace a komunikace, Finanční služby) na státech Visegrádské skupiny v období 2008-2018. Zjištěnými ovlivňujícími faktory jsou například míra využívání technologií, efektivnost využití dostupných zdrojů, výše mzdy, objem výdajů na VaV, PZI a množství přijatých technologií, zvyšování počtu pracovních sil a posílení přesunu znalostí. Pro ekonomiky je důležité se orientovat na odvětví s regionálním či celostátním potenciálem. Nejvíce se technologická mezera ve Zpracovatelském průmyslu projevovala v Maďarsku a po krizi se prohlubovala. Polsko jako nejsilnější článek mělo nejvyšší technologický růst a produktivitu práce do roku 2013. Slovensko předstihlo Polsko rapidním vzrůstem produktivity práce a technologickým růstem. Strukturální růst byl nejvíce zaznamenán v ČR a na Slovensku, zde byl nejvyšší podíl na zaměstnanosti. Nejvyšší propady zaznamenalo Polsko. Informace a komunikace držely prvenství též v Polsku, které vykazovalo nejvyšší technologický růst a produktivitu práce, ale bylo státem s nejvyššími strukturálními mezerami a nejnižším podílem odvětví na zaměstnanosti. Naopak nejslabším článkem Finančních služeb bylo Maďarsko s nejvyšší technologickou mezerou. Polsko předstihlo Slovensko po roce 2014, udržovalo nejvyšší technologický růst, produktivitu práce a téz strukturální růst. Slovensko vykazovalo nejnižší podíl na zaměstnanosti zároveň a nejvyšší strukturální mezery.

Abstract:

The aim of the diploma thesis is to determine the size of technological gap and its determining factors, with the use of the Shift-share analysis. Emphasis is placed on the technological and structural component of the Shift-share analysis formula. The research has been carried out in three sectors (Manufacturing, Information and Communication, Financial Services) in the Visegrad Group countries in the period 2008-2018. The identified influencing factors are, for example, the level of using technologies, the efficiency of using available resources, the amount of wages, the volume of expenditures on R&D, FDI and amount of technologies adopted, increasing the workforce and strengthening knowledge transfer. It is important to focus on sectors with regional or national potential. The technological gap in the Manufacturing industry was most pronounced in Hungary and the gap even widened after the crisis. Poland, as the strongest link, had the highest technological growth and labour productivity until 2013. Slovakia outpaced Poland in terms of rapid growth in labour productivity and technological growth. The highest structural growth was in the Czech Republic and Slovakia and the highest declines were achieved in Poland. Poland also held the lead in Information and communication, which showed the highest technological growth and labour productivity, but it was the country with the highest structural gaps and the lowest share of the sector in employment. On the contrary the weakest link in Financial Services with the highest technology gap was Hungary. Poland overtook Slovakia after 2014 and it maintained the highest labour productivity, technological and structural growth, while Slovakia reported the opposite.
