The Role of Liturgy and Liturgical Texts in the Process of the Forming of Identity and Mutual Diferentiation between Czech Reformed Christians in the Years 1916-1924

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vztahem liturgie, respektive liturgických textů, a identity jednotlivých názorových proudů českých reformních křesťanů v letech 1916-1924, tedy v prostředí vzniku a utváření Církve československé. Práce tak zahrnuje názorové prostředí katolického modernismu, církve československé a dílčím způsobem i České národní obce pravoslavné. Na základě srovnávaných textů liturgií a jejich následné analýzy za pomoci komentářů samotných autorů a sekundární literatury a církevních dokumentů popisuje, jakou měla roli liturgie v tomto procesu. Srovnávanými a analyzovanými liturgickými tvary jsou: překlad římskokatolické mše pořízený Karlem Farským, návrh liturgie Aloise Tuháčka, v Olomouci vypracovaný návrh liturgie dle Jana Zlatoústého, prosazovaný Matějem Pavlíkem, a samotná posléze přijatá liturgie Karla Farského. Autor v práci dochází k závěru, že liturgie měla úlohu vyjádření reformních požadavků i deklarativního přihlášení či odmítnutí různých křesťanských tradic. Současně se však skrze diskuse nad liturgiemi a skrze šíření textů liturgií samotná identita jednotlivých proudů dotvářela.

Abstract:

This thesis is concerned with the relationship between lithurgy, more precisely lithurgical texts, and the identity of viewpoint groups of Czech reformed Christians between the years 1916 and 1924, during the time of birth and formation of Czechoslovak Church. The thesis therefore includes the belief background of Catholic modernism, Czechoslovak Church and partly also Czech National Orthodox Community. It describes on the basis of compared lithurgical texts and their subsequent analysis with the help of commentaries by the authors themselves and of secondary sources and ecclesiactical documents the role of lithurgy in this process. The compared and analysed lithurgical texts are the following: the translation of Roman Catholic mass by Karel Farský, the lithurgy proposal by Alois Tuháček, the lithurgy proposal created in Olomouc according to John Chrysostom, promoted by Matěj Pavlík, and the later accepted lithurgy by Karel Farský itself. The author comes in his thesis to the conclusion that lithurgy had the role of expressing reformatory demands as well as declarative proclaiming or rejecting of varios Christian traditions. At the same time however, the identity of the individual streams was by itself completed by discussions of lithurgies and distributin of their texts.
