Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the analysis of Toni Morrison?s nonfictional works. The main aim of the thesis is to introduce Toni Morrison not as a novelist ? which is the context Morrison is most frequently studied in ? but a as a thinker, literary critic and commentator of social and political events and issues. The thesis consists of two parts ? theoretical and analytical. The theoretical part concentrates on the biographical information about Toni Morrison?s life, work and achievements. In addition to Morrison?s biography, the theoretical part also includes a brief thematic overview of her novels and the most important contexts which are necessary to take into consideration when analysing Morrison?s work. The analytical part presents a detailed analysis of Morrison?s nonfictional texts; it is divided into three chapters which correspond to the three major topics Morrison addresses in her nonfiction, i.e. literature and literary criticism, Black history and literature, and society and politics. The analytical part also comments upon the significance of Morrison?s ideas in the literary world and upon the influence of her nonfiction on her novels.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou nebeletristických textů Toni Morrisonové. Hlavním cílem práce je představit Toni Morrisonovou ne jako romanopiskyni ? což je kontext, ve kterém je nejčastěji studována ? ale jako myslitelku, literární kritičku a komentátorku sociálních a politických událostí a problémů. Diplomová práce se skládá ze dvou částí ? teoretické a analytické. Teoretická část se zaměřuje na biografické informace ohledně života, práce a profesních úspěchů Toni Morrisonové. Teoretická část také obsahuje stručný tematický souhrn jejich románů a přehled kontextů, které Morrisonovou ovlivnily a které je nutné vzít v úvahu při analýze její literární tvorby. Analytická část se soustředí na podrobnou analýzu nebeletristických textů Toni Morrisonové. Tato část je rozdělena do tří kapitol, které odpovídají nejdůležitějším tématům, kterým se Morrisonová ve svých nebeletristických textech věnuje, tj. literatura a literární kritika, černošská literatura a historie, a společnost a politika. Analytická část rovněž komentuje význam myšlenek Toni Morrisonové v literárním světě a také do jaké míry její nebeletristické texty ovlivnily její romány.
