Myths and superstitions about pregnancy, birth and puerperium

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis examines the myths and superstitions about pregnancy, birth and puerperium which are spread amongst women. The objective of the thesis is to collect myths believed by older generations and compare them with current ones. The thesis is divided into two parts, i.e. theoretical and practical. The theoretical part investigates midwife’s career development which originated directly in the folk environment. It then explores the creation and dissemination of myths, superstitions and rituals associated with them. Here, midwives often played the key role. The practical part consists of pre-research and subsequent quantitative research and its analysis. Myths amongst women pregnant in the last five years were collected in the pre-research, followed by a thorough study of this phenomenon. This part continues by verifying if these myths are still due to be believed or overcome by women, where they have heard of such myths and what are their main information sources.

Abstract:

Táto bakalárska práca sa zaoberá problematikou mýtov a povier o tehotenstve, pôrode a šestonedelí, ktoré sa šíria medzi ženami. Cieľom práce je zozbierať mýty, ktorým verili staršie generácie a porovnať ich s tým, čomu veria ženy dnes. Práca je rozdelená na dve časti, a to na časť teoretickú a praktickú. Teoretická časť sa zaoberá vývojom profesie pôrodnej asistentky, ktorá vznikala priamo v ľudovom prostredí. Ďalej sa zaoberá vznikom a šírením mýtov, povier a rituálov s nimi spojenými, v ktorých boli pôrodné baby často ústrednou postavou. Praktická časť pozostáva z pilotáže a následného kvantitatívneho výskumu a jeho analýzy. Skúmaná bola rozšírenosť mýtov zozbieraných v pilotáži medzi ženami, ktoré boli tehotné v posledných piatich rokoch. Ďalej zisťuje, či ženy týmto mýtom stále veria alebo sú už prekonané, kde ich počuli a aké sú hlavné zdroje informácii žien.
