Comparative linguistic analysis of headlines in broadsheet and tabloids articles

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis conducts a comparative linguistic analysis of online newspaper headlines that appear in British quality (The Guardian and The Telegraph) and popular press (The Sun and The Mirror). The practical analysis is based on N. Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), by which the communication and manipulative strategies appearing in the headlines are revealed. In the theoretical part, the thesis introduces media discourse in general, news discourse, and newspaper headlines, and explains the methodology. At the beginning of the analytical part, the corpus is described. The main subject of the analysis is the morphological-syntactic, semantic, and lexical levels. Chapters of the analytical part are divided according to the examined linguistic level. The thesis also compares the degree of correspondence between the headlines and the content of the article in question and comments on other contextually relevant factors, including images, that can help to capture the attention of readers and provide a visual context for the story the author is trying to convey. The analysis revealed that tabloids use more strategies to grab the reader's attention in their headlines than broadsheets (e.g., puns, fearmongering, directly addressing the reader, and intensification).

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá srovnávací lingvistickou analýzou titulků internetových novin, které se objevují v britském seriózním (The Guardian a The Telegraph) a bulvárním tisku (The Sun a The Mirror). Praktická část výchází z kritické analýzy diskurzu (KAD) podle N. Fairclougha, pomocí níž jsou odhaleny komunikační a manipulační strategie objevující se v titulcích. V teoretické části práce představuje mediální diskurz obecně, zpravodajský diskurz a vysvětluje metodologii. Hlavním předmětem analýzy je morfologicko-syntaktická, sémantická a lexikální rovina. Kapitoly analytické části jsou rozděleny podle zkoumané lingvistické roviny. Práce také porovnává míru korespondence mezi titulky a vlastním obsahem daného článku a zkoumá i další kontextově důležité mimojazykové prostředky (například obrázky), které mohou upoutat pozornost čtenářů a poskytnout vizuální kontext příběhu, který se autor snaží sdělit. Analýza odhalila, že bulvární tisk používá ve svých titulcích více strategií, které slouží k upoutání pozornosti čtenáře, než seriózní tisk (např. slovní hříčky, vyvolání strachu, přímé oslovení čtenáře a intenzifikace).
