Analyzing the economic and managerial implications of climate change on agricultural crop production

Abstract:

Global warming is a global threat to agricultural productivity, with rising temperatures and altered rainfall patterns lowering crop yields. This study explores the impact of climate change on wheat, maize, rice, and soybean production in six major farm economies—Australia, the United States, Japan, Canada, China, and India—over the period 1995-2022. On the basis of a sound econometric framework of Unit Root, Multicollinearity, Breusch-Pagan, Hausman, Wald Tests, and Weighted Least Squares (WLS) regression, the work tests the relationship between climatic variables (temperature and precipitation) and agricultural output. The findings indicate that temperature reduces wheat, maize, and soybean while promoting rice yield. Precipitation is beneficial to most but maize and soybean whose yield is depressed by too much rain, potentially due to soil erosion and flooding. Crop reaction to price change differs, with price rise being preferred by wheat and rice yields although the effect was more pronounced for the latter. Conversely, maize production declines when price rises and soybean production is not as sensitive to prices. The study brings out that long-term farm productivity is largely determined by climate rather than market price. The effective adaptation strategies, including climate-resilient policies, resilient agricultural practices, and improved water management, are hence key to the attainment of food security and maintenance of agricultural productivity despite the climate shifts.
