The evolution of the designation of communication technologies (GSM, social networks) in a corpus of French rap

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with lexical variation in French in the field of communication technology. From a diachronic and diatopic perspective, the development of labeling social networks and information and communication technologies in Francophone countries is analyzed. The corpus of 102 texts of Francophone rap released between 1995 and 2022 was used as a starting point, from which a lexical corpus of 111 expressions for mobile phones, social networks, and hashtags was created through non-automated excerpting. The chronological development of the examined vocabulary is the subject of the first chapter of the analytical part of the thesis, in which the hypothesis of innovative labeling is verified by copying the development of technology. The analysis showed that the lexicon in the field of telephony changes approximately every ten years, with the latest trend indicating that the most frequent designations for mobile phones are once again approaching a significant transformation due to advancing numerical convergence. The diachronic analysis of references to social network names in rap songs then demonstrated a correlation between the measurable period of highest popularity and the frequency of rappers' references to a particular social network. Song lyrics reflect the dynamic development of user preferences, that is, which social networks are now outdated and what they have been replaced with, demonstrating the relevance of studying rap lyrics for observing the dynamics of socio-lexical phenomena. The variation of diatopic character is tested in the second hypothesis of the thesis, which assumes significant variation in labeling of mobile phones and the preference for local lexical variants. However, the analysis results demonstrate that regionalisms are also used in song lyrics by speakers outside of the given regional area for stylistic and assonant effects. The final part of the thesis presents an adapted Anglicism, the hashtag, and its variability in pronunciation and semantics.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce pojednává o lexikální variantnosti francouzštiny v oblasti komunikačních technologií. Z hlediska diachronického a diatopického je analyzován vývoj označování sociálních sítí a informačních a komunikačních technologií ve frankofonních zemích. Východiskem se stal korpus 102 textů frankofonního rapu vydaného mezi roky 1995 až 2022, ze kterých byl metodou neautomatizované excerpce vytvořen lexikální korpus 111 výrazů pro mobilní telefony, sociální sítě a hashtagy. Chronologický vývoj zkoumané slovní zásoby je předmětem první kapitoly analytické části práce, ve které ověřujeme hypotézu inovativního označování kopírující vývoj technologií. Analýza prokázala , že se lexikum v oblasti telefonie obměňuje přibližně každých deset let, přičemž poslední trend poukazuje na fakt, že se nejfrekventovanější označení mobilních telefonů opět blíží k zásadní proměně v důsledku postupující numerické konvergence. Diachronní analýza odkazování na názvy sociálních sítí v rapových písních pak prokázala korelaci mezi měřitelným obdobím nejvyšší popularity a frekvencí odkazování raperů na danou sociální síť. Texty písní odráží dynamický vývoj uživatelských preferencí, tedy které sociální sítě jsou dnes již zastaralé a čím byly nahrazeny, což prokazuje relevanci studia rapových textů pro pozorování dynamiky sociolexikálních jevů. Variantnost diatopického charakteru je ověřována ve druhé hypotéze práce, která předpokládá velkou variantnost označování mobilních telefonů a preferování místních lexikálních variant. Výsledek analýzy však prokazuje, že regionalismy jsou v textech písní využívané i mluvčími mimo danou regionální oblast za účelem stylistických i asonančních efektů. Závěrečná část práce představuje adaptovaný anglicismus hashtag a jeho variabilitu výslovnostní i sémantickou.
