The experience of people with inflammatory bowel disease: Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis

Abstract:

This qualitative study deals with the experience of people with inflammatory bowel disease, which are chronic diseases of gastrointestinal system. They include Crohn´s disease and ulcerative colitis. The intro-ductory part focuses on the present research findings in this area, mainly those related to the psychosocial functioning and difficulties associated with the life with these diseases and it also involves a review of phenomenological research about the experience of people with other chronic diseases. The research sample includes 8 people aged 22 to 31 of whom 6 are women and 2 are men, who are diagnosed with an in-flammatory bowel disease. The research was conducted through semi-structured interviews. The data were analysed using an interpretative phenomenological analysis, from which nine topics resulted. „The finding of the diagnosis perceived as shock or redemption“, „Coping with the limitations of the disease – from the experience of limitation to the state of not perceiving any“, „The power of thoughts – they make it worse, it´s better when I don´t think of it“, „The struggle for the control of the disease“, „The need to know the disease“, „The disease as a shaping factor and impulse to reevaluation of lifestyle and priorities“, „Private disease“, „Stress has a negative effect, but I don´t know what to do with it“ and „Future raises fear and questions“. These topics and essences of experiences of each respondent are presented as results. In discussion, these results are discussed in context of present findigs and there are also stated limitations of this study and possibilities for future research.

Abstract:

Táto kvalitatívna práca sa zaoberá skúsenosťou ľudí s nešpecifickými črevnými zápalmi, ktoré sú chronic-kými ochoreniami gastrointestinálneho traktu a medzi ktoré patrí Crohnova choroba a ulcerózna kolitída. Úvodná časť práce sa venuje doterajším výskumným zisteniam v tejto oblasti, najmä tým, ktoré sa týkajú psychosociálneho fungovania a ťažkostí spojených so životom s týmito ochoreniami a tiež zahŕňa prehľad fenomenologických výskumov, ktoré sa venovali skúsenosti ľudí s inými chronickými ochoreniami. Vý-skumný súbor tvorí 8 ľudí, z čoho je 6 žien a 2 muži, vo veku 22 až 31 rokov, ktorí sú diagnostikovaní ocho-rením spadajúcim pod nešpecifické črevné zápaly. Ich skúsenosti boli zisťované formou pološtrukturova-ného rozhovoru a následne boli analyzované prostredníctvom interpretatívnej fenomenologickej analýzy, z ktorej vyplynulo deväť tém, ktorými sú: „Zistenie diagnózy pociťované ako šok alebo ako vykúpenie“, „Vyrovnávanie sa s obmedzeniami ochorenia – od zážitku obmedzení až po ich nevnímanie“, „Sila myš-lienok – zhoršujú to, je lepšie, keď na to nemyslím“, „Boj o kontrolu nad chorobou“, „Potreba spoznať cho-robu“, „Choroba ako formujúci faktor a impulz k prehodnoteniu životného štýlu a životných priorít“, „Súkromná choroba“, „Stres pôsobí negatívne, no neviem, čo s ním“ a „Budúcnosť vyvoláva strach a otázky“. Ako výsledky sú prezentované tieto témy a tiež esencie skúseností jednotlivých respondentov. V diskusii sú tieto výsledky diskutované v kontexte doterajších zistení a tiež sú uvedené limity práce a možnosti ďalšieho výskumu.
