Literary Fiction, Perspective Taking and Emotions as a Moderator

Abstract:

V poslední době věnuje psychologický výzkum značnou pozornost vztahu mezi čtením fikce a teorií mysli čtenáře. Výzkumy naznačují, že čtení může zlepšit výkon v Reading Mind in the Eyes testu. Vzhledem k šíři pojmu teorie mysli však stále není jasné, nakolik tato zjištění platí i na další situace vyžadující převzetí perspektivy. Navíc, výsledky jsou poměrně nekonzistentní, je proto zapotřebí prověřit, jakou roli hrají vlastnosti samotného textu, například to, jaké pocity ve čtenáři text vyvolá. Tato práce má dva cíle: 1) zjistit, zda se vliv literatury projeví na efektu iluzorní transparence, jehož výskyt spojen s nedostatky při přebírání perspektivy a 2) prověřit, zda se na tomto efektu podepíše emoční valence textu. Pro účely výzkumu byly vybrány tři texty, příběh zobrazující negativní sociální interakci, příběh zobrazující pozitivní sociální interakci a literární kritika, jejichž účinky na prožívání čtenáře byly ověřeny v rámci předvýzkumu. Celkem 181 participantům byl náhodně přidělen jeden ze tří textů, po jehož přečtení byli požádáni o vyplnění série měření. Ta mimo stanovení míry iluzorní transparence zahrnovala škály celoživotního vystavení fikci, transportu do narativu a identifikace s postavou. Analýza dat neodhalila signifikantní vliv literárního textu na míru iluzorní transparence. Stejně tak se neprokázal ani vliv emoční valence textu a dalších kontrolních proměnných. Výsledky této práce neposkytují podporu pro hypotézu, že čtení literární fikce může okamžitě zlepšit přesnost přebírání perspektivy.

Abstract:

Recently, relationship between fiction reading and theory of mind of the readers has been getting considerable attention. Research indicates that reading can improve the performance in the Reading Mind in the Eyes test. However, considering how broad the concept of theory of mind is, it is not clear whether these findings apply to other tasks requiring perspective taking as well. Also, given the inconsistency of results, investigation of other characteristics of the text, such as the emotions it elicits in the reader, is needed. This study aims to investigate 1) whether literary fiction influences the illusory transparency effect, which is connected with the inaccuracy in perspective taking, and 2) whether this effect is influenced by the emotional valence of text. Three texts were chosen for the purpose of this study: story depicting negative social interaction, story depicting positive social interaction and a literature review, whose effect on the emotional experience of readers were assessed during pretest. One hundred and eighty-one participants were randomly assigned one of the texts to read. Afterwards, participants completed measurements of lifetime exposure to fiction, transportation into the narrative, identification with the character and illusory transparency. Analysis did not reveal any significant effect of the texts on the illusory transparency effect. Influence of emotions of participants and other control variables was not observed as well. Results do not provide support for the hypothesis that literary fiction can enhance perspective taking of the readers.
