Orlan, (cyber)feminism: Postmodern utopia?

Abstract:

V této diplomové práci se snažím kriticky zhodnotit kontroverzní tvorbu francouzské umělkyně Orlan. Zvláště její série performancí La réincarnation de Sainte-Orlan z první poloviny 90. let, která se skládá z řady plastických operací jejího vlastního těla, se pro svůj poněkud hrozivý výraz stala předmětem diskusí o limitech současného umění, a nadále vybízí k hlubšímu zamyšlení nad smyslem takových projevů.V tomto textu se snažím Orlanino dílo uchopit jako jeden z projevů kulturního i sociálního ovzduší 90. let, zejména pak postfeministických strategií subverze a kyberkulturních utopických vizí budoucnosti. V tomto kontextu se pak tvorba Orlan ukazuje být koncentrovaným, metaforickým vyjádřením těchto snah, a do značné míry i jejich přímou realizací. Přestože však Orlaniny performance skutečně překračují hranice čistého uměleckého vyjádření směrem ke kulturnímu či sociálnímu aktivismu, feministicko-kyborgovské sny o nové svobodné identitě se ani v jejím případě nezdají být realizovány.

Abstract:

In this theses I am trying to take a critical standpoint to the work of the controversial performance artist Orlan, particularly the series Réincarnation de Sainte-Orlan, which she performed from the early 1990s, and which consisted of a series of cosmetic surgeries of her own body. This multilayered work got broadly known especially by its abhorrent appearance combined with a parodic, grotesque show, and rose questions regarding the limits of contemporary art. In my text I am analysing Orlan´s work as an integral part of the (1990s) social and cultural issues, which seem to offer a key to a deeper understanding of her work. In this regard I am especially focusing on the post-feminst theories and their strategies of women´s emancipation, and I am broadly discussing the ways Orlan artistically and metaphorically responses to them. At the same time I am trying to see Orlan´s work in the context of 1980s and 1990s cyberculture, which provides a background of utopian futuristic visions of human (or post-human) embodiment. In this context, the work of Orlan seems to be a direct realization of the feminist and cybercultural ideas, and so steps far beyond the borders of artistic creation to the field of social or cultural activism. After all it is particularly this feature of her work, which from my point of view often doesn´t allow to consider her work adequately in neither of these fields, and causes inacceptance in the art-critical area, and at the same time lack of effectivity in the actual social-activist field.
