Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the Jewish community in New York from the beginning of Jewish immigration to the USA at the end of 17th century till the 2nd half of the 20th century. It describes the process of migration to America and assimilation to new culture and environment. The main reason for their arrival to New World was the persecution and killing of the Jews in czarist Russia at the end of 19th century and the Nazi takeover of power during the Second World War. Thousands of Jews decided to flee because of anti-Semites who would deport them to concentration camps. The Jews found new home, which offered them liberty and chance to live a better life than their predecessors. The thesis describes the inception and development of the Jewsih community in Brooklyn as well as the establishment of first Jewish institutions. The part of the thesis is devoted to Hasidic Jews who are known for their Orthodox ideology. The last chapter deals with the most significant Jewish holidays, traditions and rituals and the way they are celebrated.

Tato práce se zabývá židovskou komunitou v New Yorku od začátku imigrace Židů do Spojených států na konci 17. století do druhé poloviny 20. století. Popisuje proces migrace do Ameriky a asimilaci na novou kuturu a prostředí. Hlavním důvodem příchodu Židů do Nového světa bylo jejich pronásledování a vraždění v carském Rusku na konci 19. století a během druhé světové války po převzetí moci nacisty. Tisíce Židů se rozhodlo uniknout před antisemity, převozem do koncentračních táborů a jisté smrti. Našli nový domov, který jim nabídl svobodu a šanci žít lepší život než jejich předchůdci. Práce popisuje vznik a rozvoj židovské komunity v Brooklynu a založení prvních židovských institucí. Část práce je věnována Chasidským židům, kteří jsou známí svou ortodoxní ideologií. Poslední kapitola se zabývá nejdůležitějšími židovskými svátky, tradicemi a rituály a způsobem jejich slavení.
