The Embryo as the Liminal Person

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá statusem lidského embrya v soudobé západní společnosti. V souvislosti s rozvojem moderních reprodukčních technologií se embryo stále častěji stává předmětem debat ohledně začátku lidského života. Na něj je v této práci nahlíženo optikou přechodového rituálu v pojetí Arnolda Van Gennepa (1997) a liminarity rozpracované Victorem Turnerem (1967, 2004). Vyjednávání postavení lidského embrya ve společnosti a kritéria pro připsání statusu osoby jsou analyzována na příkladech z pěti různých sociálních světů – biomedicíny, bioetiky, náboženství, práva a z perspektivy pacientů podstupujících procedury IVF. Základním argumentem práce je, že i přes snahu embryo zadefinovat do jasných kategorií a přiřadit mu pozici v rámci sociální struktury, tomuto úsilí odolává. Lze jej zařadit do více kategorií najednou a přitom naplno nespadá ani do jedné. Nachází se mimo naši sociální strukturu, v liminaritě.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with status of the human embryo in contemporary western society. As the modern reproductive technologies are emerging, embryo becomes a subject of debates regarding beginning of human life. The process of becoming human person is here perceived as Arnold VanGennep´s (1997) rite de passage and the liminal period developed by Victor Turner (1967, 2004) is stressed. Negotiation of embryo´s position in society and criteria for ascribing personhood are analyzed through examples from five distinct social worlds – biomedicine, bioethics, religion, law and from the perspective of patients undergoing IVF procedures. Basic argument of this thesis is that even there are various attempts to define embryo as belonging to certain category, and to fix it into a clear position in social structure, this effort is not accomplished. It can belong into sev-eral categories at once and at the same time not really fit to either one. It is located out of our social structure, it is in liminality.
