Building identity in cyberspace in case of Instagram social network

Abstract:

Sociální média již neodmyslitelně patří do každodenního života soudobé společnosti. Sociální bariéry se díky nim odstraňují a vznikají nové prostory pro sebeprezentaci. Jedním z nich je sociální platforma Instagram. Instagram byl původně navržen pro sdílení fotografií, dnes zde můžeme také sdílet krátká videa. Pro uživatele této platformy je to výzva k vytvoření nové identity. Tuto identitu tvoří prostřednictvím fotografie. Tato práce se zabývá tím, jak se identita pomocí vizuálních výrazových prostředků buduje, zda je možné vytvořit typologii této identity, co pro uživatele identita znamená a do jaké míry je autentická. V neposlední řadě pak hodnotí, zda je fotografie vhodným nástrojem pro utváření identity. Tento výzkum je zaměřen na studenty uměleckých škol, kteří sociální platformu Instagram využívají jak pro osobní, tak pro umělecké prezentace.

Abstract:

Social media are essentials of everyday life in contemporary society. They have the power to eliminate social barriers and they create new environment for self-presentation. One of them is social network Instagram. Instagram was originally launched for sharing photos, but nowadays we can also share videos there. For users of this platform this means an opportunity to build new identity. This identity is being built through photographs. The thesis focuses on the process of building this identity. It also answers the question if it is possible to create typology of these identities, what identity means to Instaram’s users and if this identity can be qualified as authentic one. The thesis also evaluates the function of photography as a tool for building identity. This research focuses on art universities students, who use Instagram for personal and professional use.
