Influence of electromagnetic fields on fertility of males

Abstract:

Práce poskytuje přehled dosavadních zjištění o vlivu elektromagnetických polí na mužskou fertilitu. Ukazuje, že není možné jednoznačně hodnotit vlivy jako prokázané či vyvrácené a že je v tomto poli velká variabilita až protichůdnost závěrů. Práce se dále zabývá možnými důvody pro rozporuplnost v této důležité oblasti. Nejčastěji uváděnými důvody jsou odlišná kvalita studií a různé nastavení experimentů. Tato práce obsahuje analýzu existujících studií, v rámci které byl zkoumán vliv nastavení prováděných experimentů na výsledný efekt působení elektromagnetického pole. Z analýzy vychází, že ze sledovaných parametrů designu experimentu má největší vliv na výsledek použitá frekvence a amplituda. Pro hodnocení kvality publikovaných studií byl do analýzy zařazen i vliv impakt faktoru (IF), nicméně komplexní posuzování kvality studií bylo nad rámec této práce. Ve shrnutí lze říct, že problematika vlivu elektromagnetických polí na mužskou fertilitu zůstává otevřená a že výsledky studií závisí především na jejich kvalitě a na nastavení experimentů.

Abstract:

This thesis provides an overview of what is currently known about the influence of electromagnetic fields on male fertility. It indicates that it is not possible to prove nor disprove the impact of electromagnetic fields on male fertility. Moreover, it suggests that the large variability, even contradictoriness, can be observed in relation to the research results in the field. In this thesis it is also discussed what the possible explanation for the inconsistency in this important problem space could be. It has been found that the most common reasons are likely to be differences in quality and the types of design of the experiments. That is why this thesis provides analysis of existing studies, with focus on how the design of experiments may impact the results. It has been discovered that the amplitude and the frequency used have the biggest impact on the result of the experiment. To evaluate the quality of published studies, impact factor (IF) was also added to the analysis as a parameter. Nevertheless, more complex evaluation of the quality of the past research was out of scope of this work. To summarize, the problematic of influence of EMF on male fertility remains open and the results of the studies depend mainly on their quality and on the design of the experiments.
