A Contextual Analysis of Jin Yong's Short Story Sword of the Yue Maiden

Abstract:

Magisterská práce staví do středu svého zájmu povídku s názvem Meč Dívky z Yue (Yuenü jian 越女剑) od význačného čínského spisovatele Jin Yonga金庸. Meč Dívky z Yue je jedinou autorovou povídkou a zároveň jeho posledním literárním počinem. Zatímco jeho románům byla věnována velká akademická pozornost, dotyčná povídka se v akademických textech vyskytuje jen velmi zřídka. Cílem této práce je proto ukázat, že povídka má v Jin Yongově tvorbě pevnou a zásadní pozici. Magisterská práce se neopírá jen o samotnou povídku, ale dává ji do kontextu jak další Jin Yongovy tvorby, tak širšího historicko-kulturního kontextu. Vlastní analýze povídky proto předchází teoretická část založená na sekundárních zdrojích, která poskytuje kontext nutný pro samotnou literární analýzu. Součástí této části práce je představení základních termínů jako wuxia 武侠, jianghu 江湖či gender; shrnutí postavení žen v tradiční čínské společnosti; a popis vývoje literární tradice hrdinek nüxia 女侠. Hlavní část magisterské práce se na základě analýzy povídky a širšího historicko-kulturního kontextu zaměřuje na povídku Meč Dívky z Yue ze tří rozdílných úhlů pohledu. Nejprve povídku začleňuje do souvislosti s původní legendou o Dívce z Yue a narativu o králi Goujianovi z Letopisů států Wu a Yue a zamýšlí se nad tím, jaké cíle Jin Yong výběrem tohoto příběhu sleduje a zda je možné, že se jedná o cíle nacionalistické. Poté přistupuje práce k otázce genderu a zobrazení žen a na závěr se zamýšlí nad bojovými schopnostmi, způsobem jejich zisku a vysvětluje spojitost mezi Jin Yongovým fikčním světem a taoistickým chápáním světa.

Abstract:

Master´s thesis focuses on the short story “Sword of the Yue Maiden” written by famous Chinese writer Jin Yong. “Sword of the Yue Maiden” is the only short story written by this author and is also his last piece of literary work. While the academics paid lots of attention to his novels, the short story most often stays unnoticed. The aim of this thesis therefore is to prove that the short story has a solid and important position in Jin Yong´s fiction. The master´s thesis puts the story into the broader context of both Jin Yong´s fiction and historical-cultural context. Before the analysis of the short story, the thesis provides necessary context based on the secondary literature. First, concepts like wuxia 武侠, jianghu 江湖or gender are introduced. Second, the position of women in traditional Chinese society is discussed. Third, the thesis introduces the history of narratives focusing on the theme of nüxia 女侠. The main part of the master´s thesis then discusses the short story “Sword of the Yue Maiden” from three different perspectives. First, it places it in a broader context of the legend of Yue Maiden and the story of King Goujian from Annals of Wu and Yue and tries to find out the reasons why Jin Yong chose to use this particular source for his short story and if the reasons could be the nationalistic one. Second, it discusses the depiction of gender and women. Thirdly, it introduces the combat skills and the way of obtaining them and discusses the connection between Jin Yong´s fictional world and the Taoist understanding of the world.
