The aim of this thesis is to compare the English and German tenses that refer to the past time. The thesis consists of two parts. The first part contains the theoretical description of the English and German tenses with respect to their meaning and use within the context. Cílem této diplomové práce je porovnat anglické a německé slovesné časy, které se užívají k popisování minulých stavů a dějů v jazyce. Úvodní část práce se zaměřuje na teorii možných časů v angličtině a němčině, které referují o minulé skutečnosti, přičemž důraz je kladen na jejich význam a užití v rámci kontextu.
