The view on woman in philosophical works

Abstract:

Tématem mé diplomové práce je Pohled na ženu v dílech filozofů. V této práci jsem nejen zkoumala názory a myšlenky Platóna, Aristotela a Schopenhauera, ale zaměřila jsem se i na popis období, ve kterých žili. První dva filozofové jsou zástupci antiky, konkrétně klasického období starověkého Řecka, a třetí je představitelem novověku, přesněji řečeno 19. století. Jelikož o Platónovi je známo, že se věnoval homosexuální tématice, zvolila jsem jej s cílem zjistit, zda ho to ovlivnilo v jeho názorech na ženské pohlaví. Aristotela jsem zařadila proto, abych porovnala oba tyto představitele starověku mezi sebou a zjistila, do jaké míry spolu navzájem souhlasili či nesouhlasili. Pro kontrast jsem si vybrala právě Schopenhauera, protože na jeho tvorbu měla velký vliv nenávist k ženám zapříčiněná vztahem k jeho matce. Zaměřila jsem se proto na různé úhly pohledu ve vnímání ženského pohlaví, např. jak byla žena nahlížena jako manželka a matka nebo jako prostitutka. Soustředila jsem se také na to, jakými možnostmi a právy disponovala nejen v manželství, ale také při zániku manželského svazku. Hlavním cílem mé diplomové práce bylo srovnání jednotlivých období a filozofů a analýza podobností nebo odlišností v jejich názorech na tutéž problematiku.

Abstract:

My diploma thesis is entitled Attitudes to Women in the Work of Philosophers. The thesis examines not only the ideas and thoughts on women as they were expressed respectively by Plato, Aristotle and Schopenhauer but analyses also the times in which these thinkers lived. The first two philosophers represent Antiquity, specifically the period of Classical Greece, the third one belongs to modern times, to the 19th century. I have chosen Plato for the very fact that he is known to have devoted himself to the topic of homosexuality, so I wanted to find out if this in some ways coloured his views on the female sex. Aristotle has been included for the purpose of comparing these two ancient philosophers and finding out how much they agreed or disagreed with each other. Schopenhauer is discussed in order to provide a marked contrast because his work was deeply influenced by his hatred towards women stemming from his relationship with his mother. Therefore, I focused on different attitudes to the female sex such as, for example, the woman viewed as a wife and mother or as a prostitute. The question of what choices and rights the woman had not only in marriage but also in divorce is also addressed. The main aim of my thesis is to offer a comparative study of the historical periods and philosophers under discussion and of the similarities and differences in their views on the same issue.
