Metaphor in the news media: English / Czech contrastive analysis

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to examine the use of metaphors from a corpus of newspaper articles collected from the websites of one British and one Czech quality newspaper, one mid-market newspaper and one popular newspaper using Critical Metaphor Analysis and to compare the use of metaphors in English and Czech. The metaphors in this thesis are divided according to their common aspects and organized according to certain criteria, and differences in their use both between newspapers from one language and between British and Czech newspapers are examined here.

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je prozkoumat použití metafor z korpusu novinových článků nasbíraných z internetových stránek jedněch britských a jedněch českých seriózních novin, jedněch novin středního trhu a jedněch bulvárních novin, a to za použití Kritické analýzy metafor, a současně je jejím cílem také porovnat použití metafor v angličtině a v češtině. Metafory v této práci jsou rozděleny na základě společných aspektů a seřazeny podle jistých kritérií, přičemž jsou zde prozkoumány rozdíly v jejich použití jak mezi novinami z jednoho jazyka, tak i mezi britskými a českými novinami.
