The role of intercultural communication in international negotiation. Case study: USA, Mexico

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá úlohou mezikulturní komunikace v mezinárodním vyjednáváním. Jejím cílem je dosáhnout zjištění, zda a jakým způsobem kulturní odlišnosti ovlivňují efektivnost mezinárodního vyjednávání. Analýza kulturních odlišností byla provedena na základě teorie mezikulturní komunikace a opírá se především o metodiku kulturních dimenzí Geerta Hofstedeho. Tato metodika je aplikována v případové studii na americkou a mexickou společnost. Projevy kulturních odlišností jsou ukázány na Severoamerické dohodě o volném obchodu (North American Free Trade Area, NAFTA). Tyto poznatky vedou k závěru, že neznalost kulturních determinant vede k vytvoření kulturní bariéry, která výrazně ovlivňuje efektivnost jednání. O to větší důraz se klade na schopnost vést mezikulturní komunikaci. Jedině tak může být mezinárodní vyjednávání efektivní.

Abstract:

The thesis explores the role of intercultural communication in international negotiation. The aim is to find out whether and how cultural differences influence the effectiveness of international negotiation. The analysis of cultural differences was based on the theory of intercultural communication and it is based primarily on the methodology of cultural dimensions of Geert Hofstede. The methodology is then applied in the case study of American and Mexican culture. Examples of cultural differences are shown in negotiation of North American Free Trade Area (NAFTA). These findings lead to the conclusion that ignorance of cultural determinants leads to the creation of a cultural barrier that significantly affects the effectiveness of the negotiations. The ability to conduct intercultural communication is therefore becoming more important. Only then international negotiation can be effective.
