Blood and Pride: Bullfighting Tradition in Spain Captured in Modern Age (Documentary film)

Abstract:

Diplomová práce Krev a pýcha se zabývá obrazem typické tradice býčích zápasů a jejich kulturní a společenskou pozicí v současném Španělsku na začátku 21. století. Práce sestává ze dvou částí – dokumentárního filmu na DVD a psané teoretické části. Autentický dokument nabízí pohled do zákulisí koridy ze dvou stran reprezentujících názorový konflikt, který charakterizuje aktuální postavení fenoménu. Jeden argumentační pól tvoří ústřední protagonisté býčích zápasů – prestižní představitelé profese matadorů. Jejich názory jsou prezentovány na pozadí exkurzu do prostředí koridy v rámci tradičních slavností v severošpanělském městě Roa. Druhý pól zaujímají vůdčí osobnosti hnutí za práva zvířat, bojující ve Španělsku proti býčím zápasům. Aktivity a argumenty odpůrců koridy jsou prezentovány během specifického protestu před nejvýznamnější býčí arénou v zemi – amfiteátrem Las Ventas v hlavním městě Madridu. Textová část práce v širším kontextu vymezuje fenomén býčích zápasů, zaměřuje se na jejich historické kořeny a detailně popisuje jejich průběh a nezbytné související aspekty. V případě odpůrců koridy se zabývá počátky a filozofickými východisky hnutí za práva zvířat, nastiňuje jeho moderní podobu a představuje činnost organizací ochránců zvířat ve vztahu ke španělské národní tradici. Práce se věnuje také teoretickému vymezení dokumentárního filmu a podrobné deskripci vzniku dokumentu Krev a pýcha včetně nezbytné kritické reflexe realizačního procesu. Diplomová práce Krev a pýcha obsahuje 240 609 znaků (s mezerami) a 35 199 slov. Délka stopáže dokumentárního filmu je 28 minut 43 vteřin.

Abstract:

The thesis Blood and Pride focuses on an image of a typical tradition of bullfighting in contemporary Spain, stressing its cultural and social position at the beginning of the 21st century. The thesis consists of two parts - a documentary film on a DVD and a written theoretical part. The authentic documentary offers a background insight into bullfighting from two different points of view representing a conflict of opinions, which characterizes the current position of the phenomenon. One side of argumentation constitutes of main protagonists of bullfights - prestigious representatives of the profession of matadors. Their opinions are presented through an excursion into the realm of bullfighting during traditional celebrations in the city of Roa in northern Spain. The other side of argumentation take up the leading personalities of animal rights movement fighting against bullfighting in Spain. Activities and arguments of the anti-bullfighting community are presented during a specific protest in front of the most significant bullfighting arena in the country - Las Ventas in the capital city of Madrid.The textual part of the thesis introduces a broader context of the phenomenon of bullfights. It focuses on historical roots of the tradition a describes in detail the course of the action and a lot of relevant related aspects. As for the bullfighting opponents the thesis deals with origins and philosophical roots of animal rights movement, outlines its modern form and actions of animal rights activists linked with the spanish national tradition. The thesis also focuses on theoretical specification of documentary film and describes in detail making of the documentary Blood and Pride including a critical reflection on the process of creation. The thesis Blood and Pride contains 240 609 characters (including spacing) and 35 199 words. The footage length of the documentary film is 28 minutes 43 seconds.
