Terry Pratchett’s Witches – where do they come from and where are they going?

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá dílem Terryho Pratchetta a jeho zpracováním čarodějky ve světě fantasy. V průběhu historie se pohled na čarodějnice dramaticky změnil, obzvláště v posledních letech díky moderním příběhům, knihám a filmům. Tím jak jsou dnes čarodějnice znázorněny v médiích se názor lidstva na ně změnil z negativního na neutrální, v některých případech dokonce i na pozitivní. To mělo za následek výskyt zcela nových variant čarodějnic a knihy Terryho Pratchetta jsou toho zářným příkladem. V této práci prozkoumávám historii samotného konceptu čarodějnice, jeho první výskyty a jak se v průběhu historie změnil. Zároveň uvádím hlavní znaky, které byly s čarodějnicemi nejvíce spojovány, jak v historii tak v literatuře, staré i nové. Pak tyto znaky propojuji s čarodějnicemi, které Terry Pratchett vytvořil, prozkoumám, jak tyto prvky dále využívá, mění a jak ovlivňují jeho postavy, jejich příběhy a svět který pro ně stvořil. Příběhy samotné hrají klíčovou roli v Pratchettových knihách. Nejen, že jsou jeho postavy hlavními aktéry v příbězích, které čteme, ale příběhy mají určitou moc a vliv na obyvatele světa Zeměplochy, utvářejí jejich životy a ovlivňují jejich chování. Jako příklad jsem si vybral právě knihy o čarodějkách, jednak proto, že jsou jejich postavy příběhy ovlivňovány jako jedny z nejvíc, ale zároveň jsou si ony samy toho vědomy a tuto skutečnost využívají ve svůj vlastní prospěch. Toto je také úzce spojeno se stylem jakým Terry Pratchett psal, jelikož příběhy Zeměplochy nejsou ovlivněny jenom příběhy z ní samotné. Pratchett využíval mnoho existujících příběhů a typických příběhových prvků a nápadů jako zdroj pro své vlastní příběhy. Někdy dokonce jiné knihy a filmy přímo parodoval. A jeho čarodějky jsou pro toto opět dokonalým příkladem, jelikož každá je alespoň nějakým způsobem spojená s nějakým již existujícím příběhem či nápadem z našeho ‘skutečného’ světa.

Abstract:

This thesis explores Terry Pratchett’s take on the trope of a witch in a fantasy setting. Throughout history the image of a witch has changed dramatically, especially in the recent years thanks to modern entertainment. Thanks to being depicted as they are in modern media, the image of a witch has gone from strongly negative to neutral, if not outright positive. This has led to a rise of many new variants of the character of a witch, Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series being a prime example of such a change. In this thesis I explore the history behind the concept of a witch, where it began and how it changed under the influence of time. Furthermore I point out the strongest and most typical tropes that have accompanied the character of a witch in both history and literature, old and modern. Then I connect such tropes to the witches Pratchett created for his series, explore how he uses them, subverts them and how they shape both his characters, their stories and even the world around them. Stories play a pivotal role in Pratchett’s worldbuilding. Not just that the characters themselves are actors in a certain story, but that stories have a certain power over the inhabitants of Pratchett’s Discworld, shaping their lives and influencing the way they act in certain situations. I have chosen the witches’ series to demonstrate this, as they are the most aware of this and not only they are affected by it, they use this reality for their own gain. This is also connected to Pratchett’s writing style, as not only stories from Discworld themselves influence the world. Pratchett used many other, existing stories, tropes and ideas as the point of reference for his worldbuilding, if not outright parodying other books and movies. Yet again, the witches serve as an excellent example of such story writing and worldbuilding methods as all of them are at least to some extent connected to some already existing idea from our ‘real’ world.
