Experience of People with Visual Impairment as Passengers in the Public Transport in the City of Brno

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje tématu bariér při cestování osob se zrakovým postižením v Brně. Pro výzkum využívá kvalitativních výzkumných metod – zúčastněného pozorování a polostrukturovaných rozhovorů. Z výsledků rozhovorů s osobami se zrakovým postižením, zúčastněného pozorováním školení řidičů DPmB a školení osob se zrakovým postižením vyvozuje závěry o tom, jak překonávat bariéry, které se při cestování osob se zrakovým postižením brněnskou městskou hromadnou dopravou objevují. Na základě výzkumných zjištění jsou navržena zlepšení, která by mohla cestování osob se zrakovým postižením zjednodušit. První kapitola se zabývá tématikou osob se zrakovým postižením a bariér, se kterými se osoby se zrakovým postižením potýkají. Krátce načrtává také otázky sociální inkluze, autonomie a participace osob se zrakovým postižením na sociálním životě. Druhá kapitola je věnována historii cestování brněnskou městskou hromadnou dopravou s důrazem na možnosti osob se zrakovým postižením. Také jsou v ní popsány kompenzační pomůcky, které osoby se zrakovým postižením využívají. Ve třetí kapitole je shrnuta metodologie práce, zejména výzkumné metody, výběr vzorku a etika výzkumu. Čtvrtá, analytická kapitola shrnuje poznatky z jednotlivých částí výzkumu (rozhovory s cestujícími se zrakovým postižením, zúčastněné pozorování školení řidičů a školení cestujících). Navrhuje také možnosti využití výsledků výzkumu.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the subject of barriers to travel for people with visual impairment in Brno. The research adopts qualitative methods – semi-structured interviews with visually impaired persons and participant observations of drivers' training for the employees of municipal public transport and passengers' training for the persons with visual impairment. Based on the research's findings, the thesis further analyzes opportunities and proposes improvements to the public transport system in order to ease and improve public transport for the persons with visual impairment. The first chapter addresses the topic of human visual impairment and the barriers the persons with visual impairment usually encounter. It outlines the issues of social inclusion, independence, and social life participation of people with visual impairments. The second chapter outlines the history of public transport in Brno, with emphasis on the history of its accessibility for people with visual impairment. It also characterizes the assistive systems that have been used for enabling the public transport use. The third chapter summarizes the methodology of the thesis, with a focus on the research methods, sample selection and the research ethics. The fourth, analytical chapter, summarizes the research findings (interviews with visually impaired passengers, the participant observation of drivers' training and passengers' training). It also proposes the possible future use of the research results.
