Anxiety and its relationship with personality traits and aspects of parenting in early adolescence

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá jedním z faktorů pro zdravý vývoj dítěte, a to konkrétně úzkostí. Hlavním cílem bylo zjistit, jak úzkost u dětí v adolescentním věku souvisí s osobnostními rysy a aspekty rodičovské výchovy. Jako sady prediktorů byly zvoleny osobnostní rysy pětifaktorového modelu osobnosti (extraverze, přívětivost, svědomitost, otevřenost vůči zkušenosti, neuroticismus) a aspekty rodičovské výchovy. Data byla čerpána z již proběhlé zrychlené longitudinální studie Brno Longitudinal Study of Youth (BLSY), v rámci které proběhla čtyři měření v letech 2014 až 2016. Pro měření úrovně úzkosti byl použit dotazník Weinberger Adjustment Inventory (WAI-SH). Pro měření osobnostních rysů byl použit pětifaktorový model osobnosti měřený pomocí dotazníku Big Five Inventory (BFI-44). Aspekty rodičovské výchovy byly měřeny pomocí Adolescent Family Process Measure (AFP). Výzkumu se zúčastnilo přibližně 574 žáků (počty se v jednotlivých měřeních lišily) základních škol a víceletých gymnázií, kteří byli rozděleni do dvou věkových kohort. Do kohorty 12letých a 13letých. Ve všech čtyřech měřeních byla statisticky významná souvislost nalezena mezi úzkostí a neuroticismem, což potvrdilo naše předpoklady. Jako další prediktory z pětifaktorového modelu osobnosti byly prokázány otevřenost vůči zkušenosti a svědomitost. Souvislost aspektů rodičovské výchovy a úzkosti byla také potvrzena. Statisticky významné aspekty výchovy byly blízkost s matkou či s otcem, rodičovská kontrola matky či otce, inkonzistence ve výchově obou rodičů a komunikace a podpora ze strany matky. Tato sada prediktorů má vliv na úzkost více u dívek než u chlapců. Úrovně naměřené úzkosti se liší dle pohlaví, kdy u dívek byla naměřena vyšší míra úzkosti.

Abstract:

The present thesis deals with one of the factors on which the child’s healthy developement depends on, specifically anxiety. The main goal of this study wasto explore the relationship between anxiety and personal traits of the five-factor model of personality (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, opennes to experience, neuroticism) and aspects of parenting. The data were drawn from the Brno Longitudinal Study of Youth (BLSY) that has already taken place and which included four measurements from 2014 to 2016. The Weinberger Adjustment Inventory (WAI-SH) was used to measure the level of anxiety. The personal traits of the five-factor model of personality were measured using the Big Five Inventory (BFI-44). The aspects of parenting were measured using the Adolescent Family Process Measure (AFP). This study involved approximately 574 students (numbers of participants varied within individual measruements) from primary schools and multy-year grammar schools who were divided by age into two cohorts, the 12-year-olds and the 13-years-olds. From all the factors of the five-factor model of personality, neuroticism was found as the main predictor of anxiety in all four measurements, which confirms our assumptions . Openness to experience and conscientiousness were demonstrated as further predictors of the five-factor model of personality. The relationship between aspects of parenting nad anxiety has also been confirmed. Statistically significant aspects of parenting were closeness with mother or father, parental control of mother or father, inconsistency in the upbringing of both parents and communication and received support from mother. The levels of anxiety varied by gender, with girls having a higher level of anxiety.
