„Das Adam Smith Problem“ and David Hume: relation of ethics and economics

Abstract:

This thesis is concerned with the relation of ethical and economic theories in the works of David Hume with the consideration of the “Adam Smith Problem” and the underlying philosophical foundations of modern schools of economics. In the thesis, we are shedding some light on the relation between ethical and methodological foundations for economic theory, which is based on them. This is the reason why we are concerned with Adam Smith and the “Adam Smith Problem” discourse which nicely illustrates the connectedness of ethical and economical theories. The ethical and economic works of Smith and Hume are compared to the fundamental assumptions of orthodox and heterodox economics, upon which we try to show the dichotomy in used methodologies and their relevancy for the contemporary era.

Abstract:

Práca sa zaoberá vzťahom etických a ekonomických teórií v diele Davida Humea s ohľadom na „Das Adam Smith Problem“ a základné filozofické predpoklady moderných ekonomických prúdov. V práci poukazujeme na vzťah etických a metodologických predpokladov pre ekonomickú teóriu, ktorá sa na ich základe formuluje. Z tohto dôvodu sa zaoberáme Adamom Smithom a diskurzom „Das Adam Smith Problem“, pretože dobre ilustruje vzájomnú prepojenosť etických a ekonomických teórií. Etické a ekonomické dielo Humea a Smitha je porovnané so základnými predpokladmi ortodoxnej a heterodoxnej ekonómie, na základe čoho sa snažíme poukázať na dichotómiu v užitej metodológií a jej relevantnosť pre dnešné obdobie.
