The impact of dating apps on gay and bisexual men's body image

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá body image gay a bisexuálních mužů používajících seznamovací aplikace. Konkrétně jsem zkoumala vztahy mezi self-reportovanou frekvencí používání seznamovacích aplikací, touhou po svalové hmotě a sebe-objektifikací. V explorativní analýze jsem zjišťovala vliv délky používání seznamovacích aplikací, obsah profilových fotografií a motivaci k používání těchto aplikací na touhu po svalové hmotě a sebe-objektifikaci. Výsledky, navzdory očekávání, neprokázaly vztah mezi self-reportovanou frekvencí používání seznamovacích aplikací a sebe-objektifikací, ani vztah mezi self-reportovanou frekvencí používání seznamovacích aplikací a touhou po svalové hmotě. Podpořily však hypotetizovanou pozitivní souvislost mezi touhou po svalové hmotě a sebe-objektifikací. Tento výsledek je v souladu se studií od Seekis et al. (2021) a rozšiřuje tak teorii objektifikace (Fredrickson & Ro-berts, 1997) i pro gay a bisexuální muže s touhou po svalové hmotě jako důsledkem sebe-objektifikace. Výsledky explorativní analýzy poukázaly na pozitivní vztah mezi obsahem profilových fotografií, konkrétně počtem obnažených částí těla, s touhou po svalové hmotě. Také ukázaly vztah motivace k používání seznamovacích aplikací se sebe-objektifikací, kde uživatelé, kteří hledali vážný vztah, či příležitostný sex zažívali vyšší sebe-objektifikaci než ti, kteří hledali přátele. Předpokládám tedy, že seznamovací aplikace jsou sociálními sítěmi, které přispívají k internalizování ideálu krásy a následné sebe-objektifikaci, avšak při dalším zkoumání vlivu seznamovacích aplikací na body image by bylo lepší se zaměřit nejen na častost používání ale i na specifika seznamovacích aplikací, jako je sebeprezentace, či motivace.

Abstract:

This study examines the body image of gay and bisexual men using dating apps. Specifically, I investigated the relationships between self-reported frequency of dating app use, drive for muscularity and self-objectification. In an exploratory analysis, I examined the impact of the duration of dating app use, the content of profile pictures, and motivation for using these apps on the drive for muscularity and self-objectification. Contrary to expectations, the results did not demonstrate a relationship between self-reported frequency of dating app use and self-objectification, nor a relationship between self-reported frequency of dating app use and drive for muscularity. However, the results supported the hypothesised positive association between the drive for muscularity and self-objectification. This finding aligns with the study by Seekis et al. (2021). It extends the objectification theory (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997) to gay and bisexual men with a drive for muscularity as a consequence of self-objectification. The results of the exploratory analysis indicated a positive relationship between the content of profile pictures, the number of exposed body parts, and the desire for muscularity. They also revealed a relationship between motivation for using dating apps and self-objectification, wherein users seeking a serious relationship or casual sex experienced higher self-objectification than those seeking friend-ships. Therefore, dating apps are social platforms for internalising beauty ideals and subsequent self-objectification. However, further examination of the impact of dating apps on body image would benefit from focusing on the frequency of usage and the specifics of dating applications, such as self-presentation and motivation.
