Efficiency evaluations of companies in the EU countries

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá metodami pro hodnocení efektivity podniků v zemích EU. Hodnocení bylo provedeno jednak na úrovni jednotlivých podniků ve dvou vybraných sektorech (NACE kód C, sektory 24 a 25), ale také na základě agregovaných údajů vybraných států EU. Hodnocení efektivity bylo realizováno na základě parametrické metody stochastické hraniční analýzy a neparametrické metody analýzy obalu dat. Výsledky ukazují, že volba konkrétního modelu značně ovlivní výslednou efektivitu. Mezi některými typy parametrických a neparametrických modelů byly nalezeny silné korelace (zejména při práci s agregovanými údaji). Dále byly v této práci zkoumány metody vhodné pro identifikaci mezních stavů neefektivity projevujících se bankrotem společnosti. Zde byly využity jak tradiční statistické metody (logistická regrese) a přístupy strojového učení (metoda podpůrných vektorů a klasifikační stromy), tak i samotná metoda analýzy obalu dat. Výsledky ukazují, že predikční schopnosti těchto metod mohou být ovlivněny for-mou předzpracování dat a v případě analýzy obalu dat je nutné vhodně volit dělící bod použitý pro klasifikaci bankrotních a aktivních společností.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the methods for efficiency evaluation of companies in the EU countries. The evaluation was carried out at the level of individual companies in two selected sectors (NACE code C, sectors 24 and 25), but also on the basis of aggregated data of the EU countries. Efficiency evaluation was performed on the basis of parametric method of stochastic frontier analysis and nonparametric method of data envelopment analysis. The results show that the choice of a particular model will greatly affect the efficiency results. Strong correlations were found between some types of parametric and nonparametric models (especially when aggregated data was employed). Furthermore, the methods suitable for identification of state, of inefficiency manifested by the bankruptcy of the company, were investigated. Traditional statistical method of logistic regression was used together with machine learning approaches (support vector machines and classification trees), and the method of data envelopment analysis itself. The results show that the predictive capabilities of these methods can be influenced by data preprocessing and, in case of data envelopment analysis, it is necessary to carefully select the threshold used for the classification of bankrupted and active companies.
