Prefaces in the Czech language prints of the second half of the 16th century

Abstract:

Analýza jazykově českých tištěných dedikací a předmluv druhé poloviny 16. století, na které se soustředila tato práce, si kladla za cíl nastínit situaci v literárním životě této epochy. Dosavadní literárněhistorické studie sice s úvodními paratexty pracovaly, čerpaly z nich informace o životě spisovatele či překladatele, nebo o zázemí vzniku konkrétní edice, ale k hlubším ponorům docházelo jen výjimečně. Proto byl výzkum veden frontálně, snažil se postihnout maximální počet nám dochovaných jazykově českých tisků evidovaných v databázi Knihopisu (za období 2013 až 2020 se podařilo nashromáždit a pročíst 619 bibliografických jednotek, což odpovídá 81% z celkového stavu 765 bibliografických jednotek obsahující úvodní paratext), neselektovat žádnou skupinu textů, neupřednostňovat žádné autory či žánr. Práce je členěna do sedmi kapitol, které představují konkrétní kroky při práci s materiálem. První kapitola seznamuje s dosavadním výzkumem historických paratextů v zahraničí a u nás. Druhá kapitola se soustředí na pramennou základnu výzkumu, její popis a statistické parametry. Třetí kapitola se pokusila zkoumané úvodní paratexty zahrnout do kontextu všech paratextů, s nimiž pracoval ve své teorii Gérard Genette a s nimiž se setkáváme v tištěné knize 16. století. Čtvrtá kapitola se věnuje dedikaci z různých úhlů pohledu, zkoumá formální náležitosti a strukturu dedikace, společenská pravidla spojená s dedikací a jejich užívání v literární komunikaci. Na základě statistického šetření byla provedena analýza formou medailonů jednotlivých dedikátorů. Pozornost byla věnována autorům, překladatelům a editorům, které jsme si rozdělili dle sociálních vrstev kněží, všech konfesí, městské inteligence a univerzitních mistrů, v neposlední řadě také tiskařů. V závěru kapitoly se soustředíme naopak na problematiku dedikantů a mecenátu. Pátá kapitola je věnována čtenářským předmluvám, jejich struktuře, typologii a reflexi v různých žánrech (biblická vydání, mravněvýchovná a náboženská literatura, odborná a populární literatura). Šestá kapitola pracuje s nasbíranými socio-kulturními stopami literárního života na pomyslné ose autor – text – čtenář v druhé polovině 16. století. V závěrečné sedmé kapitole shrnujeme a reflektujeme získané výsledky.

Abstract:

The present analysis of the printed dedications and prefaces in the Czech language from the second half of the 16th century aims to present an outline of the literary life of this era. Although existing literary-historical studies have already used the introductory paratexts as the source of information on the life of a writer or a translator or on the background in which a specific edition originated, only few of these studies explored these paratexts in greater depth. For this reason, our research was conducted frontally, trying to capture the maximum number of extant prints in the Czech language recorded in the Bibliography database (between 2013 – 2020, it was possible to collect and go through 619 bibliographic units which amounts to 81% of the total of 765 bibliographic units containing the introductory paratext). The research also did not select any particular group of texts and did not prioritize any specific authors or genres. The work is divided into seven chapters which reflect the actual steps of how the source material was approached. The first chapter presents the existing research on the historical paratexts both abroad and in the Czech republic. The second chapter focuses on the resource basis of the research, its description and statistic parameters. The third chapter tried to set the researched introductory paratexts in the context of all paratexts which G. Genette used in his theory and which are found in the 16th century printed book. The fourth chapter explores dedication from different points of view; it studies its formal attributes and its structure, social rules which apply to dedication as well as its use in literary communication. Based on statistical research, an analysis was conducted by means of portraits of the individual dedicators. The role of the authors, translators and editors was explored by means of dividing them according to social layers into priests, all confessions, town intelligentsia and university masters and, last but not least, also printers. In its final section, the chapter focuses on the topic of dedicants and patronage. The fifth chapter is dedicated to readers’ prefaces, their structure, typology and the way prefaces are reflected in various genres (Biblical editions, morally-educational and religious texts, scientific and popular literature). The sixth chapter revolves around the collected socio-cultural traces of the literary life on the imaginary author – text – reader axis of the second half of the 16th century. The final seventh chapter summarizes and reflects on the achieved results.
