A Corporeal Analysis of English and Czech Nominal Business Collocations

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá korpusovou analýzou anglických a českých kolokací z oblasti bankovnictví a financí, získaných z předních britských a českých odborných novin a časopisů. Cílem výzkumu bylo zdokumentovat a interpretovat kolokabilitu nejfrekventovanějších anglických obchodních lexikálních výrazů a jejich českých protikladů. Teoretická část práce popisuje důvody, které vedly k výběru tématu, důvody proč si toto téma zaslouží pozornost a rovněž uvádí cíle výzkumu a nástroje používané pro zpracování analytické části práce. Součástí teoretické části je přehledný výklad přístupů ke kolokacím, definice kolokací a jejich interpretace v anglickém i českém prostředí až do současnosti. Stěžejní, praktická část práce je založena na analýze předem zvolených anglických odborných lexikálních výrazů a jejich českých protikladů z hlediska jejich sémantické funkce v korpusech, z hlediska etymologie, pozice a frekvence výskytů v korpusech a zejména z hlediska jejich kolokability. Závěrečná část práce shrnuje výsledky zkoumání a prokazuje platnost, případně neplatnost hypotéz nastíněných v úvodní části práce.

Abstract:

The objective of the dissertation was to document and interpret the collocability of the most frequently used lemmas in Business English and their counterparts in Czech, particularly in the fields of banking and finance, retrieved from the top British and Czech business newspapers and magazines. The theoretical part provides an introduction to the topic, followed by the methodology used both in preparation of the corpora and in the analysis of the collocations retrieved from the corpora, and a description of the steps taken during the process of the analysis and evaluation. The theoretical part also provides a detailed insight to collocations, with an emphasis on the different approaches to collocations and their definitions, both in English and in Czech. The practical part deals with the analysis of pre-selected English lemmas and their Czech counterparts from the point of view of their semantic function in the corpora, etymology, position and frequency of occurrence in the corpora and from the point of view of their collocability. The final part sums up the findings of the practical part and shows the correctness/incorrectness of the hypotheses raised in the theoretical part of the dissertation. The dissertation is concluded with an index of the primary and secondary sources consulted and tables of collocations recorded for the English and Czech lemmas analysed are appended.
