From drawing to computer: Transformation of an animated film

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce zkoumá vztah klasického kresleného a počítačově animovaného filmu. Zabývá se proměnou filmové řeči v souvislosti s příchodem počítačů coby platformy k vytváření animovaného filmu. První část práce představuje klasický kreslený film a jeho nástup v Hollywoodu. Druhá se zaměřuje na vývoj hollywoodské kinematografie na přelomu 80. a 90. let, kdy se rozšířilo využívání počítačů pro tvorbu speciálních efektů, dále i na ekonomické a širší kulturně společenské okolnosti, se zohledněním filmově historického kontextu. Prostřednictvím analyzování vybraných filmů – Sněhurky a sedmi trpaslíků (1937), jako prvního celovečerního kresleného animovaného filmu, a Toy Story: Příběhu hraček (1995), jako prvního celovečerního počítačově animovaného filmu – se zaměřím na pohled z hlediska procesu tvorby filmu, jeho produkce a postprodukce, a přístupu k animaci. Budu se snažit odpovědět na otázku, zda došlo k proměně média animovaného filmu a také, jakým způsobem se filmová řeč přizpůsobila konceptu počítačové animace.

Abstract:

The bachelor’s thesis examines the relationship between traditional and computer animation. It deals with the transformation of film language in connection with the arrival of computers as a platform for creating animated film. The first part describes traditional animation and its beginning in Hollywood. The second part focuses on the development of Hollywood cinema at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, when the use of computers for the creation of special effects was expanded, as well as on economic and wider cultural and social circumstances, with regard to historical context of film. Using the analysis of selected films - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), as the first feature traditional animated film, Toy Story (1995), as the first feature computer animated film – I focus on describing the whole process in terms of film preproduction, production, postproduction and approach to animation. I will try to answer the question of whether the medium of animated film has changed and also how film language adapted to the concept of computer animation.
