Forms of conflicts between parents and intensive MMORPG players

Abstract:

Při hraní MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games) se jedinec dostává do herního světa, kde může potkávat stovky až tisíce dalších hráčů a vcházet s nimi do interakcí. I díky tomu se hraní MMORPG stává oblíbenou zábavou čím dál většího počtu lidí. Někteří jedinci se hraní věnují velmi intenzivně (kolem 20 hodin týdně a více), což může ovlivňovat nejen je samotné, ale i vztahy s jejich blízkými. Tato studie se zabývá vztahem hráčů s jejich rodiči a zda se vlivem hraní MMORPG dostávají hráči s rodiči do konfliktu. Předchozí výzkumy ukázaly, že používání informačních a komunikačních technologií (ICT) obvykle způsobuje v rodině nějaké rozpory. (Hraní MMORPG je jeden ze způsobů používání ICT.) Na vznik těchto rozporů mají vliv různé faktory: např. generační digitální propast mezi rodiči a dětmi, kdy děti ICT rozumí více než rodiče; nebo očekávání rodičů, že děti budou používat počítač ke vzdělávání, zatímco ony ho využívají hlavně k zábavě. Tato studie sbírá poznatky o konfliktech aktivních hráčů MMORPG s rodiči – bylo zjištěno, že konflikty vznikají jak kolem hraní samotného, tak kolem jiných oblastí (školní prospěch, pomoc v domácnosti), kde hraní ke vzniku konfliktů přispívá. Dále jsou popsány různé podoby konfliktů, jejich následky a okolnosti zasahující do vývoje těchto konfliktů.

Abstract:

By playing MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games) person gets to the world, where he or she can meet from hundreds to thousands other players and interact with them. Also thanks to this, playing MMORPG becomes favourite hobby of more and more people. Some persons put their mind to playing very intensively (about 20 hours per week and more), which can influence not only them alone, but as well their close relationships. This study is concerned with players’ relationships with their parents, and if players have conflicts influenced by playing MMORPG with their parents. Former researches showed, that information and communication technologies use (ICT use) usually brings along some disagreements. (Playing MMORPG is one of ways of ICT use.) Rise of these disagreements is influenced by different factors: i.e. generational digital divide, when children understand ICT more that their parents; or parental expectations, that children will use computer for learning, while they use it for entertainment. This study collect knowledge about active MMORPG players conflicts with parents – it was found, those conflicts arise around playing itself and also around other themes (school marks, housework), where playing contributes to the rise of conflicts. Then different conflict forms, their consequences and factor, which interfere to conflict development, are discussed.
