Relation between need for cognition and persuasion based on social identity

Abstract:

Záměrem práce je zkoumat souvislost mezi potřebou poznání a tím, jak moc se člověk nechá přesvědčit působením na sociální identitu, dále pak vztah mezi aspekty identity (míra explorace a závazku) a tendencí nechat se přesvědčit tímto způsobem. Přesvědčování působením na sociální identitu zde nabývá formy sdělení názoru ostatních osob ze stejné skupiny. Soubor participantů tvoří 88 studentů gymnázia v Kralupech nad Vltavou, z toho 43 žen a 42 mužů (3 osoby pohlaví neuvedly), průměrný věk respondentů je 18,3 let (SD = 0,61). V rámci výzkumu je měřena úroveň need for cognition a míra explorace a závazků v oblasti politiky. Dále je zjišťována změna postoje v politickém kontextu vzniklá na základě sdělení názoru ostatních členů in - group. Zkoumána je spojitost mezi potřebou poznání, aspekty identity a tím, v jaké míře se člověk nechá přesvědčit tímto typem persuase. Výsledky neukazují signifikantní vztah mezi potřebou poznání, mírou explorace ani mírou závazků a tím, jak moc se člověk sdělením názoru ostatních členů in - group nechá přesvědčit. Bylo ale zjištěno, že u osob s vyšší mírou explorace došlo k většímu posunu postoje ve směru názoru in - group než u lidí s mírou explorace nižší, tento rozdíl ovšem není signifikantní. Byl však nalezen signifikantní vztah mezi potřebou poznání a mírou, v jaké člověk exploruje v rámci politiky.

Abstract:

The present study examines a relationship between the need for cognition and the tendency to be convinced by persuasion focused on social identity, as well as the relationship between aspects of identity (exploration and commitment) and a tendency to be convinced in that way. Persuasion focused on social identity takes the form of providing the opinion of the same group members. The participants are 88 highschool students from Kralupy nad Vltavou, including 43 women and 42 men (3 respondents did not indicate the gender), the mean age is 18,3 years (SD = 0,61). The study focuses on the level of the need for cognition, how much a person has formed commitments within politics domain and how much he/she explores in that area. Furthermore, the shift in attitude in the context of politics on the basis of the opinion of the group members was detected. Relationship between the need for cognition, aspects of identity and the extent to which a person is convinced by this type of persuasion was examined. The results do not show any significant relationship between the need for cognition, exploration rate or degree of commitment and the level of how much is a person convincible by the opinion of the others from the same group. However, it was shown that people with higher levels of exploration tend to show a greater shift in attitudes in the direction of the view of in - group than people with lower levels of exploration, but the difference was not significant. In addition, the results show a significant relationship between the need for cognition and the degree of exploration in the politics area.
