Effective ways of testing vocabulary

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá různými způsoby, jak testovat slovní zásobu. Hlavním cílem je určit, které způsoby jsou efektivní pro studenty středních škol. Práce se skládá ze dvou částí, teoretické a praktické. Teoretická část popisuje základní aspekty testování. Nejdříve popisuje hlavní důvody, které vedou jak k jazykovému testování obecně, tak i k testování slovní zásoby. Další kapitola se více zabývá hlavními vlastnostmi, které by měl splňovat kvalitní jazykový test, jak například validita, praktičnost, atd. V následující části jsou popsány běžné testovací techniky a jejich výhody i nevýhody. Poslední kapitola praktické části se zaměřuje na některé výzkumy, které byly provedeny dříve, a které byly zaměřeny na podobná témata. Cílem praktické části bylo identifikovat nejefektivnější druh testu pro studenty středních škol v České Republice. Připravila jsem test na slovní zásobu, ve kterém jsem použila pět běžných testovacích technik, abych mohla srovnat jejich přednosti a slabiny. Do testování byly zapojeny čtyři skupiny studentů. Jejich výsledky, spolu s osobním ohodnoceních použitých technik, byly srovnány a popsány za účelem najít nejefektivnější techniku.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with various ways of vocabulary testing. The main purpose is to identify some effective ways to test vocabulary at upper-secondary schools. The diploma thesis consists of two main parts, the theoretical part and the practical part. The theoretical part presents the background of testing. Firstly, it describes the main reasons for language testing in general and for vocabulary testing. Then it continues with the basic qualities of a good language test, such as validity, practicality, etc. And the following part provides a description of the most common techniques that can be used for vocabulary testing. In this part, the main qualities of each of the techniques are presented in order to recognize their advantages as well as their drawbacks. The last chapter of the theoretical part is focused on several research studies that were performed and concerned with some similar aspects. The aim of the practical part was to identify the most effective testing technique for upper-secondary learners in the Czech Republic. I prepared a vocabulary test that consisted of four tasks. Each task was based on different testing technique and I tried to compare their strengths and weaknesses. Four groups of participants were involved in the process of testing. Their results and personal evaluation of tasks were described and compared in order to determine the most effective one.
