Effects of microloans on women empowerment: Case study from Cuzco region

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce se zabývá fungováním mikrofinančního sektoru a souvislostí mezi mikrofinancováním a ekonomickým rozvojem. Dále je analyzován vliv mikrofinancování na postavení žen ve společnosti. Cílem této diplomové práce je zjistit, jaké dopady mohou mít mikropůjčky na změnu postavení žen v regionu Cuzco a ověřit hypotézu, zda má mikrofinancování pozitivní vliv na posílení postavení žen. Práce je dále rozdělena na teoretickou a praktickou část. Teoretická část se věnuje konceptům mikrofinancování, zejména mikropůjčkám. Dále se zabývá postavením žen v Latinské Americe a možnostem jeho posílení. Praktická část vychází z polostrukturovaných rozhovorů se ženami, které mikropůjčky využívají. Rozhovory byly vedeny se šestnácti informátorkami a otázky byly konstruovány za účelem zjištění vlivu mikropůjček na kvalitu života těchto žen. Dále byl veden rozhovor s bankovní institucí, která mikropůjčky poskytuje.

Abstract:

The submitted thesis focuses on the workings of the microfinance sector and the relationship between microfinance and economic development. This thesis also analyses the effects that microfinance can have on the status of women in society. The main goal of this thesis is to analyse what kind of effects microfinance loans can have on the status of women in the Cuzco region of Peru, and to prove the hypothesis that these loans can in fact have a empowering and positive effect on the status of women in society. The thesis is separated into theoretical and practical sections. The theoretical section concentrates on the concept of microfinance, especially microloans. This sections also focuses on the status of women in Latin America and the possibilities for enhancing this status. The practical section is focused around semi-structured interviews with women, who have received these microloans. The interviews were conducted with sixteen female informants, and the questions were constructed so that they could describe what effects these loans have had on their lives. An interview was also conducted with a representative of a banking institution that provides these microloans.
