Puppy mills - commercial dog breeding in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Diplomová práce pojednává o fenoménu tzv. psích množíren. V první části jsou vymezeny základní pojmy a vylíčena situace v chovu psů v České republice. Další část pak popisuje současnou českou i evropskou legislativu týkající se zvířat v zájmových chovech. Jádrem práce jsou kapitoly o „domácím množení“ psů bez průkazu původu a o velkochovech psů. V oddíle věnovaném „domácímu množení“ jsou představena rizika a problémy neregulovaného chovu. Kapitola o komerčních velkochovech pojednává o jejich historii, o prostředí, ve kterém jsou psi drženi, a o dopadech pobytu psů v množírnách na jejich fyzický a psychický stav. Jsou ukázány běžné praktiky při prodeji štěňat jak na území České republiky, tak při jejich transportu do dalších zemí Evropské unie. V závěru práce jsou nastíněna možná řešení problematiky a představena současná forma osvěty veřejnosti u nás i v zahraničí.

Abstract:

The Master’s thesis discusses the phenomenon called the “puppy mills”. In the first part, an overview of the basic terminology is provided, as well as a description of the dog breeding situation in the Czech Republic and of Czech and European pet breeding legislation. The chapter on the so-called backyard breeding (breeding of non-pedigree dogs) and the chapter on the large-scale commercial breeding are the centre of the thesis. The risks and problems of unregulated breeding are presented in the chapter on backyard breeders. The chapter on large-scale commercial breeding discusses its history, the conditions in which the dogs are kept and also the after-effects of such breeding on the dogs’ physical and psychological state. The common practices used by commercial breeders when selling puppies both within the borders of the Czech Republic and outside them (selling and transporting puppies to other European Union countries) are described. The last part of the thesis outlines potential solutions to the problem of large-scale commercial dog breeding and discusses the current methods of raising public awareness in the Czech Republic and abroad.
