Conceptualisation in a second language - Understanding of metaphorical language in elementary school children

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis deals with the topic of acquiring a second language and understanding metaphorical expressions within this language among children in the lower secondary stage of elementary school. The theoretical part provides insights into the acquisition one's first native language followed by a second language. Main ideas and limitations of theories addressing this issue are mentioned, as well as the influence of age. Furthermore, it delves into language acquisition from the perspective of cognitive processes present in the brain. Specifically, it examines the process of conceptualization, which involves process of creating concepts or mental representations of personal experience with the surrounding world in the mind, forming the basis for communication. The thesis also clarifies the intricacies of metaphors, which are not purely a matter of language, but also shape the way people think. These theoretical findings form the basis for the practical part of the thesis, which focuses on the ability to understand metaphorical language among lower secondary stage elementary school children in their second language, which is English. The data were collected through a questionnaire.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá tématem osvojování si druhého jazyka a porozumění metaforickým výrazům v rámci tohoto jazyka u dětí druhého stupně základní školy. Teoretická část poskytuje informace o osvojování si nejprve svého mateřského jazyka, následně dalšího jazyka. Jsou zmíněny myšlenky i nedostatky teorií zabývajících se touto problematikou a také vliv věku. Dále zkoumá osvojování si jazyka z pohledu kognitivních procesů, které jsou v mozku přítomny. Konkrétně se zabývá procesem konceptualizace, neboli procesu vytváření konceptů, mentálních reprezentací osobní zkušenosti s okolním světem, v mysli, na základě kterých lidé komunikují. Také vysvětluje problematiku metafor, které nejsou čistě záležitostí jazyka, ale formují i způsob, kterým lidé přemýšlí. O tyto poznatky se opírá praktický část práce, která se zaměřuje na schopnost porozumět metaforickému jazyku u dětí druhého stupně základní školy v jejich druhém jazyce, kterým je angličtina. Data byla shromážděna na základě dotazníku.
