Comparison of Ritual Social Function in Selected Classical and Modern Evolutionists

Abstract:

Tato práce srovnává přístupy tří klasických evolucionistů W. R. Smitha, É. Durkheima a R. R. Maretta a tří moderních adaptacionistů W. Ironse, R. Sosise a J. Bulbulia k sociální funkci rituálu. Toto srovnání poukazuje na posun mezi evolučním výzkumem náboženství v 19. století a tím současným. Klasičtí evolucionisté jsou ovlivněni křesťanským osvícenstvím, progresivismem či Darwinovou teorií. Přestože si stanovují odlišné cíle, východiska a metody, zkoumají velmi stará, jednoduchá společenství, v nichž je rituální praxe centrální a hraje významnou roli při udržování společnosti, a tak nacházejí prospěšnou funkci náboženského chování. Podle nich tato adaptivní aktivita zachovává buď společnost (Smith), nebo jedince (Durkheim). Zatímco se jejich pozornost, kterou věnují myšlení či emocím, liší, všichni tři se snaží podat ultimátní a proximátní vysvětlení. Výzkumné metody byly v 19. století omezené především na kritické analýzy historických a antropologických textů, nicméně některé jejich myšlenky jsou podobné současnému bádání – např. teorii vývoje náboženských skupin D. S. Wilsona, teorii signalizace, teorii vtělené kognice, teorii charismatické signalizace, teorii rituální léčby a důrazu na studium emocí při rituálech. Moderní evolucionisté své teorie odvozují z neodarwinistické perspektivy biologické evoluce. Sdílejí podobné cíle, východiska (kooperační strategie, signalizace v etologii) a metody (experimentální logika, výjimkou je Irons, který svou teorii empiricky netestuje). Ironsova teorie oddanosti vychází z behaviorální ekologie a zaměřuje se na ultimátní – funkční vysvětlení náboženského chování. Sosis a Bulbulia postupně využívají další evoluční přístupy, tedy evoluční psychologii a genově-kulturní koevoluci, aby obohatili výzkum rituálu, a také nabízejí proximátní vysvětlení příčiny rituálu. Všichni moderní adaptacionisté také zdůrazňují emoce při studiu rituálu, pouze Bulbulia rozšiřuje svůj zájem o náboženské představy.

Abstract:

This work compares approaches of three classical evolutionists W. R. Smith, É. Durkheim and R. R. Marett and three modern adaptationists W. Irons, R. Sosis and J. Bulbulia to social function of ritual. The comparison highlights the shift between the 19th century evolutionary study of religion and the contemporary one. Classical evolutionists are influenced by Christian enlightenment, progressivism, and Darwin’s theory. Even though they choose different goals, sources and methods, they share exploring ancient, simple communities where ritual praxis is central and plays a significant role in maintaining society, thus finding beneficial function of religious behaviour. In their view, this adaptive activity is preserving either society (Smith) or an individual (Durkheim, Marett). While authors differ in the amount of attention they pay to mind or emotion, they all offer both ultimate and proximate explanations. Research methods in the 19th century were limited mainly to critical analyses of historical or anthropological texts, nevertheless some of their ideas are similar to contemporary studies – e.g., D. S. Wilson’s theory of evolution of religious groups, signalling theory, embodied cognition theory, charismatic signalling theory, ritual healing theory, and stressing the study of emotions in ritual. Modern evolutionists derive their theories from neodarwinian perspective of biological evolution. They share most goals, sources (cooperative strategies, signalling in ethology) and methods (experimental logic, with exception of Irons who does not test empirically). Iron’s commitment theory is grounded in behavioural ecology and focuses on the ultimate – functional explanation of religious behaviour. Sosis and Bulbulia gradually use other evolutionary approaches – e.g., evolutionary psychology and gene-culture co-evolution to enrich ritual studies and they also offer proximate explanation of ritual. All modern adaptationists emphasize emotions in the study of ritual, while Bulbulia extends his interest to religious ideas.
