Brony community: Identity, Fandom, Encoding and Decoding

Abstract:

Identita je jedním ze zásadních pojmů v společenských vědách. Identita určuje kým jsme a jak chceme aby nás svět vnímal. Tvořba naší identity je dlouhodobý proces ve kterém nám slouží mnoho pomůcek jako je v první řadě kultura. Kultura a její subkultury, nižší celky mezi kterými volíme v hledání hodnot a významových soustav jsou jedním ze základních zdrojů procesu identifikace, procesu kterým vytváříme svojí identitu. Fandomy jsou jedním z mnoha druhů subkultur který je založený na společném prožívání a interpretaci obsahů z komerční kultury. Cílem práce je pomocí rozboru subkultur a poté procesu tvorby identit a spojení těchto dvou odhalit jaký typ lidí vyhledává fandomy a proč brony fandom ve skutečnosti není až tak záhadný a prapodivný i přes svou neobvyklou demografii. Toho dosáhneme pomocí identifikace principů na kterých procesy identifikace jak jedince tak skupiny stojí a teorie Stuarta Halla o encoding/decoding systému která vysvětluje principy subjektivního vysvětlování významů v různých kulturách. Nakonec práce na základě dat a rozdělení bronies z výzkumu Marshy H. Redden a Patricka Edwardse z webové stránky www.bronystudy.com zkombinovaných s předchozími poznatky o subkulutrách, identitě a teorii encoding/decoding popíši jednotlivé skupiny bronies a jejich přístupy k identifikaci skrze brony fandom.

Abstract:

Identity is one of the most important terms in social sciences. Identity defines who we are and how we want the world to view us. Creating an identity is a long termed process in wich we use a multitude of tools, as is culture. Culture and it's subcultures, smaller groups inbetween wich we choose in our search for values and significance systems, are one of the basic tools of the identification process, process in wich we build our identity. Fandoms are just one of many types of subcultures wich is based on common experiencing and interpretation of content from commercial culture. Goal of this work is, by using analysis of subcultures, then the process of identification and finally putting these two together to find out what sorts of people seek membership in fandoms and why in reality, brony fandom is not all that mysterious and weird despite it's unusual demographics. I am going to achieve this by identifying principles on wich the process of identification, for either a person or a whole group works and by utilizing theory of Stuart Hall, theory of encoding/decoding wich explains how we subjectively interpret meanings in different cultures. Finally, based on information from the research of Marsha H. Redden a Patrick Edwards from the website www.bronystudy.com combined with earlier findings about subcultures, identites and theory of encoding/decoding I will describe different groups of bronies and their ways of identification of themselves through the brony fandom.
