Meaning of the words "noise" and "silence" and their relationship to selected personality characteristics

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá oblastí komplexního přístupu ke studiu zvukového prostředí. V teoretické části vycházíme z mapování významů, které se vztahují ke slovům hluk a ticho, z psychologických významů hluku a výzkumů osobnostních charakteristik ve vztahu k hlukové problematice. O významu environmentálního hluku uvažujeme jako o faktoru, který působí na celkovou reakci na zvukový podnět. Cílem práce bylo v empirickém výzkumu ověřit vztah mezi osobnostními charakteristikami a významy slov hluk a ticho. Jako metoda měření významu abstraktních slov hluk a ticho byly sestaveny konkrétní 41položkové sémantické diferenciály. K měření osobnostních charakteristik jsme využili standardizovaný Eysenckův osobnostní dotazník a LEF škálu pro měření citlivosti vůči hluku. Vztah byl prokazován jako existence rozdílu ve významu u osob lišících se v osobnostních charakteristikách. Kvantitativního výzkumu se zúčastnilo 98 respondentů, kteří byli rozděleni na extroverty a introverty dle skóru extroverze, na osoby více a méně citlivé vůči hluku podle hodnot dosažených na LEF škále a na stabilní a labilní podle dosaženého skóru neuroticismu. Rozdíly mezi skupinami byly testovány na jednotlivých dílčích škálách sémantického diferenciálu zvlášť pro slovo hluk a zvlášť pro slovo ticho. Signifikantní vztah se nejvíce potvrdil mezi hodnotou dosaženou na LEF škále citlivosti vůči hluku a významy slov hluk i ticho. Jednalo se o 8 škál pro slovo hluk a 8 škál pro slovo ticho. Některé rozdíly na dílčích škálách byly potvrzeny i mezi extroverty a introverty. Pro osoby lišící se v dimenzi neuroticismu nebyl vztah prokázán.

Abstract:

The subject of this thesis deals with the problem of complex approach to soundscape studies. The theoretical part of the thesis is based on surveying the meanings referring to the words “noise” and “silence”, on psychological meanings of noise and on personality traits researches with relation to noise studies. The meaning of the environmental noise is reflected as a co-factor of the complex reaction to a sound stimulus. The goal of thesis was to verify the relationship between the personality traits and meanings of the words “noise” and “silence”. 41-item semantic differentials were used as measuring method for the meaning of the abstract words “noise” and “silence”. The personality traits were described by the standardised Eysenck Personality Questionnaire and by the LEF scale describing noise sensitivity. The relationship was proved as existing meaning difference for people with different personality traits. 98 respondents took part in the quantitative research, divided to extroverts and introverts based on their extroversion score; more and less noise-sensitive persons based on the LEF scale results; and stable and instable persons based on the neuroticism score. The differences between groups were tested on particular scales of the semantic differential, separetely for the word “noise” and separately for the word “silence”. A significant relationship was confirmed between the LEF-scale noise sensitivity value and the noise and silence meanings. 8 scales for “noise” and 8 scales for “silence” were marked. Also, some differences on the partial scales were confirmed for the extroverts and introverts. No relationship was confirmed for people with different neuroticism values.
