The relationship between perceived interparental conflict, parent–child role-confusion and subjective health complaints during adolescence

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce bylo prozkoumat souvislost mezi adolescenty subjektivně vnímanými rodičovskými konflikty, emocionálním a instrumentálním typem zmatení rolí mezi rodičem a dítětem a následnými subjektivními zdravotními stesky dospívajících. Konkrétně bylo zkoumáno, zda jednotlivé faktory vnímaného rodičovského konfliktu a jednotlivé typy zmatení rolí predikují subjektivní zdravotní stesky a zda pohlaví moderuje tyto vztahy. Posledním cílem bylo ověřit, zda zmatení rolí mediuje vztah mezi rodičovskými konflikty a subjektivními zdravotními stesky a zda tyto prediktory společně přispívají k vyšší míře subjektivních zdravotních stesků. Výzkumnou populaci tvořilo 286 adolescentů ve věku 15-19 let. Data byla získána pomocí online dotazníku. Bylo zjištěno, že vyšší míra všech faktorů rodičovského konfliktu, zejména vnímané ohrožení, predikuje vyšší míru subjektivních zdravotních stesků, přičemž pohlaví nemoderovalo tyto vztahy. Všechny typy zmatení rovněž přispívaly k vyšší míře subjektivních zdravotních stesků adolescentů. Pohlaví moderovalo vztah mezi emocionálním zmatením rolí ze strany matky a subjektivními zdravotními stesky, přičemž byl tento typ zmatení rolí více zraňující pro chlapce. Mediační analýza zjistila nepřímý efekt zmatení rolí ze strany matky ve vztahu mezi celkovou mírou rodičovského konfliktu a subjektivními zdravotními stesky adolescentů. Vyšší míra zmatení rolí ze strany matky s rodičovskými konflikty predikovaly vyšší míru subjektivních zdravotních stesků adolescentů. Výsledky studie jsou diskutovány v kontextu předchozích empirických zjištění.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis was to explore the relationship between adolescent perceived interparental conflict, emotional and instrumental parent–child role-confusion and adolescent subjective health complaints. Concretely it was examined if individual factors of perceived interparental conflict and individual types of role-confusion predict subjective health complaints and if gender moderates these relationships. The last aim of this study was to verify that role-confusion mediates the relationship between interparental conflict and subjective health complaints and that these predictors together contribute to a higher level of subjective health complaints. The research population consisted of 286 adolescents aged 15-19. Data were collected with the aid of an online questionnaire. It was found that a higher level of all interparental conflict factors, especially perceived threat, predicted a higher level of subjective health complaints. Gender did not moderate these relationships. All types of role-confusion also contributed to a higher level of subjective health complaints of adolescents. Gender moderated relationship between emotional role-confusion in the mother–child dyad and subjective health complaints, whereas this type of role-confusion was more deleterious for boys. Mediation analysis revealed that role-confusion in the mother–child dyad has indirect effect in the relationship between the overall level of interparental conflict and adolescent subjective health complaints. The higher level of role-confusion in the mother–child dyad with interparental conflicts predicted a higher level of subjective health complaints of adolescents. Results of this study are discussed in the context of previous empirical findings.
