Rezistence bakterií na antimikrobiální látky představuje celosvětový problém. Kromě toho, čím dál tím víc přibývá bakterií rezistentních na více skupin antibiotik a objevují se tzv. multirezistentní bakterie. Moderní metody molekulární biologie umožňují typizaci bakteriálních kmenů a tím přesnější sledování jejich šíření.
