Multi-year grammar school - motivation of children and parents to study

Abstract:

Vzdělávací systém v České republice nabízí širokou škálu středních škol, mezi něž patří i víceletá gymnázia. Tato instituce se vyznačuje prodlouženou docházkou, která klade specifické nároky na studenty i jejich rodiče. Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na motivaci dětí ke studiu a na motivaci a podílu rodičů na procesu přihlášení dítěte na víceleté gymnázium. Cílem práce je zjistit, co děti vede k podání přihlášky na víceletém gymnázium a zda a jakou roli zde hrají jejich rodiče. Dále práce zkoumá faktory, které ovlivňují jejich rozhodování. Práce se tedy zaměřuje především na aspekty vnitřní a vnější motivace studentů, očekávání rodičů od studia na víceletém gymnáziu, vliv vrstevníků a rodinného prostředí na motivaci dětí. Práce má empirický charakter a je rozdělena do dvou hlavních částí: teoretické a empirické. Teoretická část nejprve vymezuje základní koncepty z oblasti sociologie rodiny, sociologie vzdělávání a sociální stratifikace. Dále se zabývá problematikou motivace a jejími různými teoriemi. Empirická část práce pak využívá kombinovaný výzkum. První část využívá kvantitativní metodologii s použitím polostrukturovaného dotazníku jako nástroje. Sledovanou kohortu tvoří žáci pátých ročníků základních škol. Druhá část práce se soustředí na motivy rodičů při přihlašování dětí na víceletá gymnázia a využívá kvalitativní metodologii s použitím polostrukturovaných rozhovorů, přičemž sledovanou kohortu tvoří rodiče žáků pátých ročníků základních škol. Pro dosažení cílů práce jsou tak použity následující metody: analýza odborné literatury, dotazníkové šetření zaměřené na žáky pátých tříd a hloubkové rozhovory s rodiči žáků pátých tříd.

Abstract:

The education system in the Czech Republic offers a wide range of secondary schools, including multi-year grammar schools. These institutions are characterised by extended attendance, which places specific demands on students and their parents. This bachelor's thesis focuses on the motivation of children to study and the motivation and involvement of parents in the process of enrolling their child in a multi-year grammar school. The aim of the thesis is to find out what leads children to apply to a multi-year grammar school and whether and what role their parents play. Furthermore, the thesis examines the factors that influence their decision making. Thus, the thesis mainly focuses on aspects of students' intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, parents' expectations of studying at a multi-year grammar school, and the influence of peers and family environment on children's motivation. The thesis is empirical in nature and is divided into two main parts: theoretical and empirical. The theoretical part first defines the basic concepts of the sociology of the family, sociology of education and social stratification. Then it deals with the issue of motivation and its various theories. The empirical part of the thesis then uses a combined research design. The first part employs a quantitative methodology using a semi-structured questionnaire as an instrument. The cohort under study consists of fifth grade primary school students. The second part of the thesis focuses on parents' motives for enrolling their children in multi- year grammar schools and uses a qualitative methodology using semi-structured interviews, with the observed cohort consisting of parents of fifth year primary school pupils. To achieve the objectives of the thesis, the following methods are applied: literature analysis, a questionnaire survey focused on fifth grade pupils and in-depth interviews with parents of fifth grade pupils.
