Perceiving Lyric Poetry Through Music

Abstract:

This paper investigates perception of lyric poetry and music. It is motivated by my previous experience with composing music to accompany poetry and it looks at the comparison of the two. The paper deals with a claim that music can enhance perception of poetry and that it leads to better understanding of a particular poem. The ways of enhancing particular poems with music are analyzed and William Wordsworth's poem "My Heart Leaps Up" and William Blake's "The Sick Rose" are chosen to be dealt with. Music is composed to accompany each of them, specifically. A survey in a form of a questionnaire is conducted. The questionnaire is given to a sample of respondents, investigating their attitudes to the poems either without music or accompanied by music. The paper reports that subjectivity of perception of either poetry or music (including music composition) is in contradiction with the main thesis statement; responses from the groups of respondents appear to confirm it. Findings suggest, though, that poetry accompanied by music may be utilized in different areas of research.

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá vnímání lyrické poezie a hudby. Její napsání je motivováno mými předchozími zkušenostmi se psaním hudby k poezii a samotná práce obě umění zkoumá a porovnává. Práce se zabývá tvrzením, které říká, že hudba může podpořit vnímání lyrické poezie a to vede k lepšímu porozumění básně. Jsou hledány způsoby, jak zvýraznit konkrétní básně pomocí hudby, a "My Heart Leaps Up" od Williama Wordswortha a "The Sick Rose" od Williama Blakea" jsou následně zanalyzovány. Hudba je napsána specificky ke každé z nich. Je proveden průzkum ve formě dotazníku; ten je dán několika respondentům. Zkoumá jejich stanoviska ohledně básní a to jak samotných, tak doprovázených hudbou. Práce zjišťuje, že subjektivita vnímání poezie i hudby (včetně hudební kompozice) je v rozporu s hlavními tezemi práce, a odpovědi respondentů to potvrzují. Zjištění nicméně naznačují, že poezie doprovázená hudbou může být zužitkována v jiných oblastech výzkumu.
