The effect of sociodemographic factors on voter turnout

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá sociodemografickými faktory, které mohou ovlivňovat ochotu k volební účasti. Přínosem této práce jsou zejména výstupy plynoucí z analýzy dat zkoumaných na českém území. Hlavním pilířem této práce je logistická regrese pro binární závislou proměnnou, která zahrnuje faktor pohlaví, věk, vzdělání, příjem a místo bydliště potenciálního voliče. Výsledky této regrese ukazují pozitivní korelaci mezi ochotou k volební účasti, věkem voliče a jeho dosaženým vzděláním, pokud uvažujeme spojité proměnné. U určitých skupin voličů není pozitivní korelace prokázána (středněpříjmová, nízkopříjmová skupina a faktor pohlaví, je-li voličem žena, implikují negativní korelaci). Charakter bydliště má částečně taktéž vliv, ale není jednoznačný, neboť odhadnuté parametry krajů vyšly pouze z poloviny statisticky významné. Bakalářská práce přispívá k existujícím poznatkům o volební účasti v České republice zejména analýzou využívající kvantitativní metody. Výsledky mohou usnadnit nalezení řešení trendu snižující se volební účasti v české společnosti.

Abstract:

The bachelor’s thesis deals with sociodemographic factors that may affect the voter turnout and that put forward beneficial information resulting from the analysis of data gained and examined in the Czech territory. The major part is based on the binary logistic regression of various factors such as voter’s gender, age, the level of education, income, and the place of residence. The outcomes of binary logistic regression prove the positive correlation among the willingness to vote, age of the voter and the education level of the voter, however, there has been defined certain groups of voters in which positive correlation has not been proved (the middle-income group, low-income group and the factor of gender show the negative impact on the willingness to vote if the person is woman). The outcomes of the analysis also showed that there is no correlation in the place of residence and voter turnout (half of the regions of the Czech Republic are statistically insignificant). This bachelor’s thesis extends the existing knowledge regarding the voter turnout in the Czech Republic about the information based on the analysis that utilize the quantitative methods. Published outcomes are expected to support finding the solution to reverse decreasing voter turnout.
