Abstract:

In my undergraduate thesis I want to focus on the American Civil War. In the first part I want to take a look at the character of Edward E. Lee, General of the Army of North Virginia and probably the most important person of the confederacy. As went on, this character was pushed aside by a simple fact that he lead the armies of the South, which many people take as the bad guys. But was this charismatic man and probbly the most beloved general of the American history really a villain? In the second part I want to focus on the Battle of Gettysburg. As the biggest loss of General Lee many historians take it as the breaking point of the war. I would like to see if really it is the case and if 3 days can change the fate of such a big nation. I would also like to look upen the final attack of the battle, the so called Pickett's charge which was the most insane infantry charge ever made. I would like to know the motivation of the soldiers who willingly particitated on the attack they knew that will be hopeless.

Abstract:

V mojí bakalářské práci se chci zaměřit na americkou občanskou válku. V první části bych se rád podíval na osobu Roberte E. Leeho, generála Armád Severní Virginie a pravděpodobně nejdůležitější osobu konfederace. Jak šel čas, tato postava byla odsunuta stranou jednoduchým faktem, že vedla armády Jihu, které mnozí lidé považují v Americké Občanské Válce za ty "špatné". Ale byl tento charismatický muž a pravděpodobně nejoblíbenější generál v americké historii opravdu tím zloduchem? Ve druhé části bych se rád podrobněji podíval na bitvu u Gettysburgu. Jakožto největší prohru generála Lee ji mnozí historikové označují za zlomový bod války. Rád bych se podíval, zda je tomu skutečně tak a zda mohou opravdu 3 dny změnit osud tak velkého národa. Také bych se rád podíval na závěrečný útok bitvy, tzv. Pickett's charge, což byl jeden z nejšílenějších pěchotních útoků ve válečné historii a rád bych poznal motivaci vojáků, kteří dobrovolně šli do útoku o kterém už dopředu věděli, že je beznadějný.
